OT - UT, A&M, Tech & NCAA Realignment

Post#1 » by Mr. E » Sat Jun 5, 2010 2:25 pm

The thought of Super Conferences in NCAA football have been around for a while; but it now looks like a distinct possibility.

The Pac-10 and Big 10 are both making overtures to several schools outside of their conferences; most notably Texas and other Big 12 schools.

The current rumors have the Pac 10 wanting to lure Texas, A&M, Oklahoma, Ok State, Texas Tech & Colorado to their conference. The Big 10 and SEC are also apparantly interested in some of the Big 12 schools.

It's really looking like the Big 12 could be going the way of the Southwest Conference. If that does happen I'd personally prefer to see these schools go to the increasingly mis-named Big 10 over the Pac 10.

The best part of it all would be the likely scenario of a new major conference that would get tge keft out Big 12 schools; assuming Nebraska, Mizzou and maybe Colorado joined the Big 10.

Kansas, Kansas State, Iowa State joining up with TCU, Boise State, Houston, Utah. Lot of potential to see some well earned growth in those programs.

Baylor doesn't have Ann Richards to tilt the tables for them anymore. I doubt they are even being considered.

If A&M chooses not to go Pac 10, then I'd see them being more interested in Houston or TCU as a replacement because of the Houston & DFW television markets.

All the Texas schools are reportedly demanding Baylor be included in the Pac 10 merger instead of Colorado.

I think Texas has the power in the deal.

Really?

Yeah, Texas has some influence then.

I think Baylor is on their knees pulling all the strings they can to keep from being shut out. They have adjusted their budget to spend the money they have been pulling in - imaine the bloodletting if they have their income drop by half or more.

Funny thing is - why protect Baylor? Especially if they look at another Texas school (TCU or UH).

It has begun.

Nebraska is going to the increasingly mis-named Big-Ten.

Looks bleak for Baylor. The Pac-16 seems to be off the table now that it isn't even an issue with Colorado already in the fold. Now we see reports of TCU planning on cock-blocking them if they try to join the MWC.

You know the more I think about it, the more disappointed I become. College sports has completely defected from tradition and fierce competition, and become ALL about money. The entire re-alignment issue is all because of the lucrative payouts the Big Ten schools received from their network deal. Now everybody has to get their hands on a piece of the pie. Now wanting to increase revenue is not wrong, especially schools like A&M that are hemorrhaging cash out of their athletic departments. But if you're going to jump ship, at least find a home with increased competition. But the Pac10? Give me a break. The only thing we (UT) gain in football is USC, and UCLA in basketball. But in a 16 team conference we might see USC maybe once every three years. Oh but wait, we do get to play Arizona and Arizona St every year...whoopee...
If this were about competition and tradition we would move to the SEC where we could could play Bama, Florida, and LSU. Or maybe the Big10 where we could compete with Penn St, Ohio St, Michigan, and Notre Dame. From this business side, sure it makes sense to get as many TV markets together as you can. But as a fan I reap none of those benefits. I just want to be able to see my team play against the highest level of competition as often as possible. Am I asking too much. Is that not what sports is about?

Good move for them football wise. Basketball wise not so much.
I personally wouldnt have mind Kansas going to the Big 10. Their bball program is right up there with the Big 10 schools if not better, and at the worst, Kansas football is at the lower tier of the Big 10 schools. Like Indiana.

It looks like the Big 12 (or Big 10 really) is safe for now. :D

It looks like we'll just move forward with 10 for the time being. However, Stoops and Brown hate the idea of having a championship game for some reason, so I doubt we'll still have that. But at least we won't be part of the Pac 16 anymore. I really hope we invite TCU and Boise St or U of H. I know Boise just agreed to join the MWC, but plenty of teams have jumped ship right after joining a conference.

Fed Ex is offerring to pay a BCS conference 10 million a year if they'll bring Memphis into their conference.

Lol... Yes they do, and actually did very well in both football and basketball this past year.

UH is about to pump an insane amount of money into the facilities of their athletic department as well. They're trying to get back on the radar.

Football is key in Texas, and they have a great young coach in Kevin Sumlin who seems legitimately committed to bringing that school back to prominence.
