They probably talked about the general poor situation that city and area are in right now and convinced him that he was far too important to the local morale. Probably made a more compelling argument than LeBron's people.
I may despise Chris Paul on the court like he's John Starks re-incarnated; but he seems a good guy off the court. I could see him looking at a greater good situation here.
