If you could redo the 1984 draft?

Post#1 » by thesportsfan30 » Fri Feb 4, 2011 2:03 am

Would you choose Akeem again or get Jordan? I know outside the Rocket's community this is a dumb question but Hakeem means everything to any Rockets fan who watched them during the 90s. No one can really say how Jordan's career would have fared with Houston but it's still fun to imagine!

(I purposely spelled it Akeem because that was his name when he got drafted, he later changed it after going through anger management or something lol)

Make the Ralph Sampson trade..

Go in with Clyde, Jordan, Hakeem (unless Portland changes their pick)

Honestly, we all know Michael Jordan is the greatest player of all time. (people just doesn't want to conform) Any Year, on any Draft, on any team regardless of who they already have at the shooting guard position, Michael Jordan would go number 1 if history can be rewritten...

But i don't regret Houston going with Hakeem at all. of course 6 championships would be great but were already fortunate to have 2 championships in the city. Most cities wont even get 1. I forgot where the quote came from, but it goes something like, one of Hakeem's biggest accomplishment is getting drafted ahead of Michal Jordan and not being scrutinized for it.

I can't even play around with hypotheticals here.

Fact is, Hakeem is my favorite athlete of all time in any sport. I wouldn't change a thing.

....no wait, I would. He would retire only playing for Houston.

1983 - draft Ralph Sampson #1 and Clyde Drexler #3 (instead of Rodney McCray)
1984 - draft Akeem #1. trade Ralph to Phily for 5th pick and 10th pick
draft Barkley #5 and John Stockton #10 (was picked #16)
1985 - draft Mario Elie #19 (he was picked #160 out of 162 picks!)

SF: Elie
PF: Barkley
C: Olajuwon
PG: Stockton
SG: Drexler
Harden is still a work-in-progress. He can score, but he can't help his teammate that much - Yao Ming

Jordan was and still is a bigger douchebag than Stockton could ever hope to be.
His ego and young Akeem's ego could never have worked together.

I just got an e-boner (despite the mere mention of Stockton).

I pretty much agree with this. In retrospect Jordan turned out to be the greater player, but no one is complaining how it turned out for the Rockets.
