Deadline for buyout?

What is the timeframe that a player can wait for a buyout? I know players have gotten buyouts well past the trade deadline, but what is the deadline to get a buyout even? Just curious.

Does anyone remember last year when Ilgauskas returned to the Cavs after being traded to the Wizards? Didn't he take his time well past the March 1st deadline before deciding to return to the Cavs after finally negotiating a buyout with the Wiz? I swear it took him late March before he decided to return. So why is the deadline this year so early?

There's no deadline for a player to sign with a team after being cut. The rule only states that you must be waived before March 1 to be playoff eligible for another team.
