Courtney Lee Scouting Report

Post#1 » by Mattya » Wed Jul 18, 2012 6:28 pm

So as a Wolves fan it is rumored Courtney Lee is our back up plan to not getting Batum, which is looking likely. So I was wondering what your thoughts on him are. It's always interesting to see what the fans who watch him most think of him. Obviously he would be coached by Coach Adelman, get to play with Ricky, Love, Pek, BRoy, and Budinger. I haven't been able to watch him but the scouting reports I have heard from fellow Wolves fans is that he hits the corner 3 at an elite rate, plays defense, dunks well. I just want to know if he is too much of gambler on D, what his ball handling is like, just really what to expect if we get him, hopefully for the right price.

I hope you don't think you'll get him on the cheap.

What would you consider to be the right price?

I would say they are expecting to pay anywhere from 6-7, they won't sign him if its approaching 8 though.

-streaky shooter
-underrated athlete
-terrific defender
-great teammate
-always plays hard
-excellent lateral quickness on defense

---Lee is one of the best defenders in the league, I'd go so far as to put him in the same class as sefalosha as far as his on-ball defense is concerned. He's a solid third option as a scorer even though he's streaky and can hit big shots.

-Like you said, great 3 point shooter, best corner 3 rate of anyone in the league

-Athletic, good finisher in transition

-Shies away from contact, doesn't draw fouls. Mediocre ball handler. Don’t count on him to create much.

-Solid defender, the only downfall is his size as bigger wings can give him trouble. He’s listed at 6’5’’ but that's generous.

-Not the best guy for crunch time situations (blown finals layup, clanked two FT’s that would have won a big game for us, dumb decision-making like going for a completely out of control 1 on 4 fastbreak and ending up committing an offensive foul)

Overall he is pretty average, and I’m not sure why you guys want him? I thought you signed Roy and Shved. I’d look for another SF if you guys aren’t getting Batum, because Chase is not starting material.

The Wolves are linked to so many names its hard for us fans to know what the plan is, other than to find upgrades at the wing and bench bigs. They are rumored to be interested in Lee, R.Brewer, J.Hill, G.Steisma, Carl Landry, and with Iggy being down the list because of his contract and maybe having to give up assets to get him. While we got Brandon Roy, and Shved, while we pray that Roy is healthy, I doubt they want to risk him getting hurt and having to have Shved step his game up. Thats why I think they are interested in Lee. My dream would be to get Iggy, but I'm guessing that would be if Lee is off the market or too expensive, and if Brewer is also gone. I think Lee would be a good fit, I'm just happy I won't have to watch Ridnour and Johnson start the whole season at the 2 and 3.

I personally think Iggy should be your first option with Lee/Brewer/whoever else being the fallback plan. Iggy is a legit difference maker, while Lee is an upgrade but really won't move the needle much in the grand scheme of things. If you guys can get Iggy for Williams I would pull the trigger now.

Iggy would be great ONLY IF Roy still can ball like he used to(or close to it). You guys need offense from the wings and igoudala isn't your answer as far as thats concerned. But if Roy can still ball along with igoudala guarding the best offensive player on the other team and getting dishes from rubio you guys are all of a sudden VERY good as long as peck and rubio continue to get better. I don't think phillty would take williams for iggy though....

Obviously from a fan standpoint, Iggy should be option A. We don't really NEED a ton of creation from the wings, but we do need shooters, cutters, and defenders. Iggy is great at creating and defending, and shot pretty well last year. I wish he was option A but I don't think they want to give assets and take on salary for him. If we did trade for him though, I think that would move us up there with the Clippers and Memphis. A team with Rubio, Roy, Iggy, Love, Pek, with Barea, Budinger, Shved, Steisma would be a dream come true.

I don't quite understand the T-Wolves interest in Lee.

I like Lee, he's a good player, but I don't see how he fits on the T-Wolves. Kahn is like a pseudo Morey. He collects guards, not forwards.

Rubio, Ridnour, Barea, Roy, Shved, Ellington, Malcom Lee and now Courtney Lee?

Courtney Lee is about 6' 4 and while you can get away with him playing SF for stretches you sure don't want him to start there. Roy is a little bigger, but I don't think him playing SF is too ideal either. Shved is a slightly build combo guard.
It just doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me.

True, I don't see him or Roy having success for long periods of time at SF.....

Ellington will likely be dealt in the next couple days, M. Lee is a second year guy who is injured a lot and was supposed to be in the d-league all year last year. Like I said though they don't want to risk Brandon Roy getting injured and have to rely on Ridnour, Barea, and Shved at the two.

I'm actually indifferent whether we get Lee back or not. He is asking for alot, and we have Lamb and Kmart, and Dragic. Lee is just far too inconsistent to really want back. I'd say if dragic is signed, he'll play good D, slash to the basket and score.

I'd prefer if we sign and trade for a pick for Lee. Best case scenario.

wouldn't a team have to be really under the cap to pull this off since Lee is probably looking for $6-7 million?

How about Lee S&T to Chicago for Rip Hamilton? He has this year left @ $5million and a team option for next season at the same price. Yeah he's 34 but he would be a good mentor/backup for Jeremy Lamb, his fellow UConn alumnus. Lee would go somewhere where he would be the starter and is a contending team when healthy. This would allow Kevin Martin to be traded for a post player since Lamb and Ham can handle the two guard spot.
Harden is still a work-in-progress. He can score, but he can't help his teammate that much - Yao Ming
