Re: Royce White no show at training camp
im usually not a complainer, but he should've planned to take the bus down here a few days before camp and then discuss with Morey face to face about how they will proceed this season. All this stuff over the phone is pathetic. Bad decision on his part. I am high on training camp to get the guys developing chemistry and camraderie. He needs to get on that Greyhound today! I can pick him up tomorrow at the downtown station!

Re: Royce White no show at training camp
I saw Royce White play some summer league ball before he ever played a minute in college. And I watched a lot of him in college... some live games as well. Just from sitting a few rows behind him a couple of afternoons I can tell you he is a well meaning/decent guy. This guy isn't out to cause problems for the Rockets... be a distraction... etc.
That being said he has serious demons going on upstairs. He could probably drive to Hornets, Spurs, and Mavs games but that is about it. Being afraid to fly is no reason not to be at training camp. If Royce hasn't reported due to mental issues that is a very serious problem. I am surprised the organization and fans are not taking it more seriously.
Royce has some serious skills on the basketball court. At 6'7 (maybe 6'8 in shoes) and 270lbs Royce can barrel his way to the basket and controls the ball well. His handle is tight and he can make some insane passes. He also finishes well at the rim and had a pretty good post game at the college level. He was a 20% jumpshooter and poor free throw shooter. He is undersized to guard most posts in the NBA. He was turnover prone. His weight hurt his athleticism. If he was 240 or 250 he might even be an elite athlete.
Christopherson wasn't really the PG at Iowa State it was Royce White. In Houston Lin runs the show and Royce really isn't effective off the ball.
As talented as Royce is there will be a lot of question marks. NBA teams can put big strong guys on him and they would give him a big cushion. That could cause big problems for Royce.
This is a classic example of a gamble that is either really going to pay off or turn out to be a big bust. It all depends on what the hell is going on in Royce's head. How hard he wants to work. And if his skills match team need.

Former NHL player Jeff O'Neill of the Carolina Hurricanes also had a fear of flying and drove to every single game in his career. He had a decent career. It sounds like White's fear of flying is a little less severe.

Re: Royce White no show at training camp
A lot of people aren't reading the information carefully. Royce didn't say he wouldn't fly to any games, he said he would prefer to take the bus when it is a viable option. Oklahoma City, Dallas, San Antonio, New Orleans, Memphis, and even Atlanta are less than a 12 hour drive from Houston. And of course many road trips have cities within 4-5 hour drives of each other like Sacramento, Oakland, Los Angeles, and New York, Boston, Brooklyn, Washington, and Philadelphia.
I counted 58 flights between all of the Rockets regular season games. If you have the bus as an option, taking into account trips that are less than 12 hours in duration, he would only need to fly to roughly 20-25 games throughout the season. That's significantly less taxing on someone with an anxiety disorder and much more reasonable for him to fly say once a week rather than 2-3 times every 7 days. Although this setup obviously is far from standard in professional sports, it is doable assuming the team is accommodating and Royce is willing to compromise and fly if it is necessary.

Except for some nasty back to back games I don't see why he couldn't bus to every game.
"Thibs called back and wanted more picks," said Jorge Sedano. "And Pat Riley, literally, I was told, called him a mother-bleeper and hung up the phone."

The driver was assumed. But a trailer? How much luggage is he bringing?
(or should I say "baggage?")

Re: Royce White no show at training camp
you don't think he will not re-construct the bus to be like a trailer?
bus is too bumpy imo hard to rest comfort
if you spend 10+ hours in a ride
you need to have a bed
bathroom
kitchen for food
tv
wifi

It won't be long before the other guys on the team are asking to go to games in Royce's bus at this rate!

I expect Royce's bus to be one wild ride.
All the girls on the road trip...
So they can cook in the kitchen.

I believe he is borrowing Joe Francis's bus.

Bus is not the only option.. he can even take the train (Amtrak) from state to state, and it's even faster than the bus. That is, if he's not scared of riding the train.

Re: Royce White no show at training camp
His effort on PnR defense and transition defense was piss poor. Three of Crowder's four 3 ptrs were from pick and pops where Royce was covering Crowder and made half hearted attempts to recover and contest.
Crowder's And-1 layup was in part caused by Royce jogging back in transition while his man Crowder sprinted up court in transition.
And then on a transition alley oop dunk by Bernard James with less than a minute left in the game, Royce didn't even bother to cross half court in transition D.
Yes it's a preseason game and yes it's somewhat garbage time, but when you're a rookie trying to earn minutes, as well as trying to erase an inauspicious start to your career where you skipped the first week of camp to make demands, you've got to put out a better effort than that, c'mon son.

Re: Royce White no show at training camp
And he looked completely and utterly lost without the ball in his ball. He has Terrence Williamitis.
He looked good handling the ball though. He has lamar odom type potential.
