JVG Coming Back? Is It 2005?

Post#1 » by King Roosk » Thu May 7, 2020 6:39 am

I joined this board when Jeff Van Gundy was head coach of the Rockets, so it is an absolute trip to hear his name being circulated (via Sam Amick) as one of the leading candidates for the role.

Love JVG. He's never been head coach of a defense that finished worse than 6th in DRTG on the season. I remember his offenses were anemic, so I wonder how that would look with Houston's current personnel.

I would love to see this. I strongly believe that his time spent as a commentator will bring in a new perspective. Dude is a smart guy.

Hello everybody,

I was looking around for your draft thread but couldn't find it. I realize you guys get a lot of undrafted guys to round out the roster so this tool might be able to help a search for those players.

Tool: https://nbadraftcomp.herokuapp.com

I recently developed an NBA Draft Comparison tool that has gained a good amount of popularity on Twitter by several draft analysts

The tool retrieves similar physical, statistical (per40), and advanced stat comparisons for any player dating back to the 2000 NBA Draft based on their position

Note: Advanced stats only go back to the 2011 Draft and there are currently only limited physical comparisons for some of the 2020 prospects as the combine hasn't reported official measurements. Additionally, if you cannot find a player in the stats, visuals, or advanced pages you can enter their sports-reference url and the site will generate the comparisons then.

If you end up seeing this, any feedback/comments/suggestions that you have or would like me to add a feature to the website is something that I'd appreciate a whole lot. You can dm me here but preferable on twitter:youngwizzydfs and I will respond asap.

The experience is a lot better on desktop/laptop than mobile which is something I am working on right now

If you don't mind sharing the tool with your friends and people that would mean a whole lot as it could lead to potential donations to my site that will help keep it up! Been working on this for a few years now so it's been one hell of a roller coaster ride!

Per 40 stat comparison can be found here: https://nbadraftcomp.herokuapp.com/stats

I agree Van Gundy is very sharp. But as far as coaching, can a leopard change its spots?
We've heard similar expectations of change for JVG acolytes (SVG, Thibodeau) but we've yet to see any substantive adjustment in any of their coaching styles.
What gives you confidence JVG would be different?

I was fairly active on this board in 2005, and was never convinced that JVG was the right coach for HOU. I still am not.

Sharp guy, fun character, but not for today's league. I'd say No to him.
RealGM loves you, Melissa.

I like the idea of trying a fresh face. Hate seeing coaches get recycled after a failure elsewhere

In order for Van Gundy to be effective he needs a Center to work with and the Rockets barely have a roster. Not only that but Van Gundy is a defensive coach and he'd have to REteach that entire roster how to play.

They're not a lost cause but they would have to modify the roster to which ever Coach they hire because the team As Is can only be successful with Mike D'Antoni

I always felt he was underrated. I’d be ok with giving him a chance. Bright guy.
