Who is better? Ariza or Budinger?

Post#1 » by pr0wler » Sun Apr 4, 2010 12:10 am

Trevor Ariza is a good defender but mediocre at best on offense...a bit of a chucker with low FG%. Chase Budinger is a reasonable defender and is getting better and better as the season wears on. Great rookie season. Although his defense isn't as strong as Ariza's, he's no slouch in that category and his scoring/shooting numbers are certainly better.

Ariza is better defensively, but Budinger is definitely better offensively. I really like what he does for this team, he's able to play off the ball, a very good shooter, and explosive in transition with his athleticism. It depends on the lineup, but I'd think in a starting role next to a Brooks/Martin backcourt would likely make Ariza the better fit. What he's done the past two months is the type of role he's more accustomed to playing.

In the month of February, roughly 15/5/4 on 43% and 42% from three. Or even last month, even 40% is better for him, and 34% from downtown with 12/5/4.

I really think it's a matter of expectations more than anything. This board saw Ariza as a huge, key offseason signing, and Budinger as a middle-second rounder. Anything we get from Bud is a bonus; anything we get from Ariza is what he's supposed to do.

Basically--if both averaged 15/5/5 on decent percentages, we'd be losing our collective (poop) over Bud, and wondering why Ariza's not doing more.

Guys, I really think it's time to stop looking at players Morey's brought in compared to their expected value. Anyone who gets drafted/signed/brought in via trade is here for a reason--it may not show up on the box score all the time, but it's still the case. Get used to seeing some moves that don't make sense because we don't work in the front office, and get used to seeing second-round picks blow us away when they're on the court.

Ariza is better defender. Budinger is a better scorer. I'll give adv to ariza since he was a big part of the laker championship. Against denver last year, he was huge in at least 3 of the games.

Chase isn't a "reasonable" defender at all. Although he gives effort and tries to play within the team concept, he often loses his man and gives up easy opportunities. He should be grouped into the 3rd tier of defensive ranking on our roster, along with Martin and Andersen.

Because of this Ariza should start.

I would give ariza the slight edge and that's saying something because Cbud is a rookie.

Chase is having a better season, but that's partly because Ariza was intentionally being asked to do too much on offense. I'm more interested in who'll be better next year...

I disagree I think Ariza is trying to do too much on offense. I think people had too high of an expectation from him. I will give advantage to C-Bud he has a better contract and currently playing better. With that said we need a better defender in the starting lineup with Brooks and Martin, too bad Battier has been out.

I don't blame Ariza for trying to step up and carry the offensive load since we didn't have an apparent go-to-guy in McGrady or Yao Ming. It was just a temporary thing. His role has been greatly diminished since the hip injury and the acquiring of Kevin Martin. If Yao returns healthy next season, he'll fully return to the role that he played with the Lakers.

Right now our backcourt is built around Brooks and Martin. I, too, believe that Ariza complements those guys better than Chase does. Chase should have no problem coming off the bench where he's pretty effective.

Re Bud's defense, ran across a passing mention a couple of weeks ago that Bud was among 5 worst defenders in iso situations in the NBA.

The question we should be asking is Bud better than Martin?
Sure Martin is a much more polished scorer and can draw FTs at an amazing rate, but he can't stay healthy,is know for being a shot-hog and is a pretty poor defender. Would a Bud/Ariza starting combo be better than a Martin/Bud one?

I know that Martin has been in a slump, but there's no way Budinger is better than him right now. They are about equal shooters, but Martin is better in every other aspect scoring wise. I think Ariza is about equal to Budinger. It just depends on if your looking for offense or defense.
