[Chron] Rockets exercise team option on Chuck Hayes

Rockets planning to retain Hayes
Vet has 1 year, $2.33 million left on his contract

The Rockets plan to pick up the option on the final season of Hayes' contract, a person with knowledge of the decision said Friday, keeping Hayes, 26, from becoming a free agent. The move indicates as much about the Rockets' thinking in general as about Hayes and the one season and $2.334 million remaining on his contract.

The Rockets' decision to keep Hayes in the final season of his contract is consistent with their recent strategy of not extending the contracts of signed veteran players beyond the next collective bargaining agreement. The current agreement expires after the 2010-11 season. By picking up the final season of Hayes' contract, the Rockets would not be in position to sign him to a contract that would extend into the next collective bargaining agreement.

In keeping with the team's policy, the Rockets are not expected to make the move with Hayes official until the deadline June 30. Hayes started all 82 games this season, averaging 4.4 points on 48.9 percent shooting and 5.7 rebounds.

Thank God, our franchise is saved!!!
Wait, don't use him as a trade bait.

And so it begins.
"Morey decided in 2007 that Steve Francis was to be the "franchise player" of the Rockets only to play what... 5 games? Morey didn't think Marc Gasol was worth a look that year,"

Good gesture by the Rockets, this along with Morey saying Scola has earned his big payday.

To be cynical for a moment. Taking up the team option means he can be traded.

Truth is I'm glad he'll be back,as having a defensive specialist off the bench for a reasonable price is good news. And Yao can have somebody strong enough to practice playing physical with.

a very bad move by the rockets.
with chuck hayes on the floor, it really is 4 against 5 at the disadvantage of the rockets.

rockets need major re-construction.

First. Dude whats the deal with that avatar??? :-?
Second. He's really not as much as of an offensive liability as you make it seem. I mean he was doing reverse layups this year. I think he's moved from 5 on 4 to 5 0n 4 1/2.
Third. He more than makes up for because on the defensive end were like 6 on 5.

first of all hayes is a bench player, and notta 6th man bench player, usually middle of the bench. like wat dude above me said he's not useless on offensive end. in the regular season he and tmac were pretty good in PnR plays. w/ an above average passer he can score some. w/e he lacks on offense he makes up for w/ defense, rebounding, and hustle.

he's a bench player, notta starter, and he's a defensive specialist. he'll always be productive, w/ someone like yao his defense is a lot better,. daam shame he's 6'6

Not sure what you been watching, but Hayes have gotten comfortable with Rick's system that he started doing behind the back pass, ect. The only disadvantage we might have is if they started the hack-a-wagon.

The Rockets are lacking the courage of re-construction. Lakers can be a role model for you guys to study. They had a decent post defender in Kwamie Brown, and they traded him for Pau Gasol. Look at the impact Gasol has brought to the Lakers. Guy is one of the main reasons Lakers' success.

Rockets would never trade Kwame to another team. To have a shot at a championship, you've gotta take some risk.

(Kwame + Draft pick -> Gasol).risk <= 0.072%

Not sure if ur really acting dumb, or just trolling, but I'm sorry, we' have actually rebuild many time before. Remember the Barkley trade? or the Pippen signing? How about Stevie trade? or better yet the T-brick trade? Dude Brown is a bag of Doritos, guy is as worthless as they come, Stern force the Griz to make that trade.
