Really good article on Patterson http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/basketball ... rson101609

“He could’ve given her five minutes,” Elizabeth said. “He could’ve said, ‘Bring her by practice and I’ll step away for a minute and say, ‘Hi.’ But for him to do this for a 14-year-old girl he’d never met, and for it to be his idea … I couldn’t be more impressed.”

Good Character

As successful as he’s been on the court and in the community, Patterson has been equally impressive in the classroom, where he’s on the verge of achieving a feat that’s almost unheard of for a college athlete.

If everything goes as scheduled, Patterson, a junior, will graduate in May after only three years of college.

Intelligent

Patrick said he was one of the only members of his senior class to have a curfew. Frustrating as the situation became, it kept Patrick from running with the wrong crowd both at Huntington High – where he earned McDonald’s All-American honors after leading his team to three state titles – and at Kentucky.

Disciplined

“I’m going to do everything I can to help take us to the top,” Patterson said. “I feel like I still have a lot to prove. I want to be one of the top-10 players who ever played here. I want to be someone that fans always remember.”

Determined

In Morey We Trust :D

It's just a relief having a draft pick that doesn't sound like lurch ala jordan hill when he opens his mouth lol jk . He'll be a solid backup for scola , hopefully.

Pick: Patrick Patterson (14)

Patterson's been high on our big board (No. 6 in the final rankings) for three years, and he's a wonderful value pick at No. 14. Leave it to Daryl Morey, without a doubt a top general manager, to ignore need and take the best available player when he sees it. Patterson will have to fight for playing time with Luis Scola, Jordan Hill and Chuck Hayes, but he's so ready for this level he could easily force Hill to center and Scola to the bench by season's end. It's a shame we didn't get to see Morey work his second-round magic, as he did last year in nabbing Chase Budinger.

Que? Force Scola to the bench? Them's powerful words, mister.

I really could see Hill at backup center. Seemed like pretty much what he was doing last year...

we know he is 6'8" without shoes and 6'9.25" with shoes
question is ... 6'8" without shoes is with fro or no fro?

I think Pat Patterson was vastly undervalued and will end up being one of the most productive players in the draft - a 17/9-ish starting caliber big man who will have a long career in the league. He was an absolute steal at #14.

That said... any reasonable assets the Hawks have that you would trade him for?

He's more of an Antawn Jameson type of player with the shot blocking. Patterson has a nice jumper, shoots 35% from 3pt range, rebounds the ball and has shot blocking abilities.

Antawn Jamison and Patrick Patterson? worse than Travis Outlaw comparison
he's more like Charles Oakley

I don't really know much about him, but I was hoping he would be more of a David West. Is that close at all?

You're close.

Think 1/2 David West, 1/4 Otis Thorpe, 1/4 Shane Battier.

Personally, I'm confused by the pick. I'm confused precisely because I called it. (I'm not bragging. Check my posts.) Patterson was slated to fall, and he did. I saw that and knew enough about his game/history to recognize he would be a great fit in Houston. I had him as the 7th best prospect in the draft. OKay, fine. Yay me. But I've been doing that for several years and DMorey NEVER picks the guy informed fans expect him to pick. (I was only doing draft projections as intellectual exercise...something to keep me out of mischief while my wife decided what to next yell at me about.) This was just for fun.

I never thought I would be right.

Never not even close haha stupid layman haha why even consider it.

So I'm in an emotional tailspin. Since the pick was made, I've grown paranoid, twitchy, and unsure. I hesitate to walk down stairs, certain as I am that Daryl Morey is secretly looming from above, like DorkNinja, to shove me down. This can't be right. He made the logical pick. Can't ef'fing be.

Image

There has to be something weird in the off-ing - some random trade involving several unknown Euros and the 3rd leading scorer from the Horizon League. Either that or Morey has grown bored with the daily inanities of basketball and has decided to use his last 2 years in some diabolical game of intellectual gotcha.

I think he's fu##king with me.

I hate this guy.

Patterson: 6'9", athletic, sick dunker, can shoot 3s, poor free thrower, shot blocker, can play 3 or 4
Outlaw: 6'9", athletic, sick dunker, can shoot 3s, poor free thrower, shot blocker, can play 3 or 4

I still think Patterson is like a Travis Outlaw type of player.

OK. Fine.

But the people on RealGM actually know you. So you're the David Kahn of Internet Pretend Basketball Experts.

Sad but true.

@ Ribalding

You know I was actually about to throw in an Otis Thorpe comparison too. lol
And I'm actually also on edge about this pick. I was definitely not expecting a sound, simple pick. I guess the improvement of AB made him want to take his chances at our given spot and just take the BPA...
