The Scola and Lowry Thread

Post#1 » by tiderulz » Tue Jun 22, 2010 8:02 pm

Now that all the major FA off the table, teams are going to make serious bids on Scola and Lowry. Let's use this thread to discuss any trade proposals or rumors regarding Scolowry.

Thanks.

Would Houston consider a trade option that gave you Gortat for Scola?

Gortat would provide insurance for Ming, allow him to not have to play major minutes, could sometimes play PF also.

With 9 forwards on the Houston roster, Scola while good, is also 30 and seems like an extra wheel, especially as i am hearing that Houston is pretty high on Jordan Hill. This move would give Hill more minutes at PF and provide a safety net for any Ming injuries.

Scola is 3x the player Gortat is. After Landry was traded, he nearly averaged 20 and 10.

We wanted Gortat at a specific price, not what he ended up getting paid.

Scola is also 30 and 6'9. Gortat is 25, 6'11, and can do double digits in points and is a better rebounder and defender than Scola. But to each their own, i just wondered. Plus, if you dont think Scola starts making at least what Gortat is right now, just watch and see.

oh, and he got paid the MLE, which was the minimum he was going to take. Houston would have had to pay that at least.

You can try and sell Gortat all you want, doesnt change how the Rockets feel about him. We wanted Gortat for a certain price, another team overpaid so we no longer want him, at that price. If you look at our roster and contract situations, you will notice nearly every player is underpaid, thats how Morey rolls.

Scola is a ridiculously well conditioned athlete whose game doesnt rely on athleticism at all. He has been an iron man for us. He is the type of player who will probably play till he is 40. Defender, rebounder, blah blah...Scola is far and away a better player than Gortat, if he wasn't, you wouldnt be in here trying to trade for him.

Scola is due for a raise and he deserves it, he is probably the most underated player in the league.

I was asking because the Magic could use a good PF and Gortat is a good center behind an ironman in Howard who plays all game. Fine by me, there are lots of PF's out there, maybe not as good as Scola. I just wondered. Will be interesting this season when yet again Ming gets injured and Houston has to go looking for a Center.

I am not sure how the rules work, but due to the nature of Scola being an RFA, trading until he is resigned has some major problems somehow, though I don't remember what they are (I think part of it is that Scola has to want to go the city where he's being traded to, and it sounds like he really likes Houston). So yeah, we probably are not going to trade him.
But do you know what they call a fool, who's full of himself and jumps into the path of death because it's cool?

sign-and-trade will work
just salaries need to match
but i'm sure scola can get more than the mle

No need to take a shot at us because we didn't like your trade proposal

as much as i wanna backup center, its not worth scola if we're getting gortat. scola's value is much more than gortats. besides we got hill who has good potential. if gortat put up numbers similar to al horford then i'd do it

Scola's salary for 09-10 season is 3,375,600. If he get a contract with >20% increase of the last salary (that is > $4 million), he will be treated as a Base Year Compensation (BYC) player and his salary will only be treated as 50% of his salary in any trade scenario.

Scola will definitely get a contract > $4million, will be a BYC for any sign and trade scenario. The BYC status will make it very difficult to trade Scola with a team over the cap. For teams under the cap (with sufficient cap room), a trade is possible with a TPE (and maybe a pick) since they can sign Scola outright if Houston don't match.

I would rather pick a center in the draft than get Gortat. Even if we were to get Bosh, Scola would still be worth more than Gortat as a backup pf, so why would we trade him straight up? Gortat's oppurtunity passed in Houston when he signed an offer sheet with Dallas.

Heh, I'd always thought Gortat could do more, given the minutes (which weren't there).
After watching him get 22 in the playoffs and produce less than normal, however, I've soured on him a little, especially at 8m in 2013.

geez people, all i did was ask. I dont live in Houston, so i didnt know how he was viewed. I get it, you guys love him. Its cool, just wanted to know. Its obvious the Magic are shopping Gortat around, i just wanted to know. I said many times, he is a good PF, just a little older at 30. I wasnt putting him down.

I know you're not a HOU fan so I will lay this out for you.
Rockets ranking of trade assets:

Untouchable (Unless Lebron, Kobe, etc)

1) Yao

Core of the team (so unless we get an amazing return, won't trade easily)

2a)Scola
2b)Martin

Pieces we like and think will get better(
3)Brooks
4)Ariza

Players we value more for our team than other teams
5)Battier
6)Lowry
7)Hayes

Rookies and Sophomores
8)Budinger
9)Hill
10)Taylor

As you can see, Scola is a critical part of our team.
