Before anyone freaks out he is talking about the Chinese National Team, not the Rockets.

he also talks mess about China and told them he won't be participating on the national Chinese basketball anymore.

from the looks of the context he sounds very frustrated.

"Like I said before, I will quit the national team and the sport one day. It’s what happens to every athlete.”

He also mentions the sport..meaning the Rockets..but yes I also think he is talking about the national team.

Yeah, I agree. It is implied. I doubt he'll retire from the Chinese national team before retiring from the NBA. If he can play for the Rockets, his service to China will not cease.

I'm now less optimistic that he'll stay healthy for the entire season. It's unfortunate to see such awesome talent constantly being overshadowed by injuries.

Like I've been saying all along - I don't want to see Yao play more than 20 minutes in a regular season game. Hell, if they need to sit him til December I'm all for it. We need him more at the end of the season, not the beginning.

Miller, Hayes, Scola, Hill and Patterson should be able to provide enough minutes in the post to keep Yao's minutes down. This is why the team acquired so much depth up there.

just saw this on espn news, didnt say which team tho. it wont be so bad if he does leave the rockets, building around yao is a big risk. we get to rebuild, contenders in 5 years :( . i dont think this team can contend anyway, even w/ 35 year old brad miller

What a professional. If he can't help the team, he's not going to hurt it. If he can't reasonably come back and have decent production, then I think he's gonna quit the NBA. There's no point on pulling a Shaq and hurting teams where ever you go at the end of your career. And i honestly doubt a championship is going to do anything for him. He's already exceeded many people's expectations just being in the NBA.

via Twitter

@dmorey - Yao Ming is working diligently on his return and has consistently received positive feedback at each of his scheduled medical checkups.

@dmorey - He is currently participating in on-court basketball workouts & we continue to expect him to be ready for training camp which begins on 9/25

Of course he would say that! He's trying to attract FA's or was. Who's gonna come out and say Yao is nowhere he's supposed to be. Until I see him run around and play in a real game. I'm not trusting what any one says. After that game, we'll know for sure if we're pretenders or a lottery team.

Sorry to hear that. Yao's one of the good guys, but with his frame and his obligations to the national team, I don't think he'll ever play more than 50-60 games in a season again. Hope I'm wrong; he's a tremendous talent.

Yao Ming, or should I say Asian Tom Brady (in facial appearance), is one of the class acts in the NBA, not to mention the best center in his conference when healthy.

It's tough to play with a 7 foot 6 body and put 320 pounds of pressure on each foot, game after game, year after year.

I really hope that somehow Morey and the Rockets set up a nice, deep playoff run while Yao can still play over the next two years.

Some internet comparisons of Yao with Rik Smits are ludicrous. Smits was a 14point/7reb guy. Yao's career is a lot more like Patrick Ewing's than Smits. Those with the ridiculous knocks saying Yao was a career disappointment, are living in la la land. Yao averaged 20 and 10 for multiple seasons, with amazing shooting percentages (almost 60% from the field, 85% from the line). He is maybe the best-shooting NBA player over 7'2 ever, where most guys his size have terrible hand-eye shooting coordination. We may never again see a player over 7'2 with his skill level.

Given the rest of the NBA's star personalities, alternating from self-absorbed to beyond arrogant, Yao has always been one of the few truly good, likable guys in the league. If he retires, the league will have a huge void to fill (and not just because of Yao's height).

Yao should be fine if he doesn't dunk the ball. Just play his finesse game

Seriously, the title just bull, Yao saying that is because he knew China National Team is relying on him too much, they never stop counting on him, he is just indirectly telling them by his age, he can't serve them forever, he may retired in 1 day......who wouldn't? so better get prepare to develop young guns to take over the flag that he is holding for so long......

This is the kind of Yao-related mess we so often see. A non-story getting blown all to hell. He says something for the benefit of one audience, then neither his intended OR unintended audiences grasp it.

I guess nobody expects a man that big to be nuanced.

I'll say exactly what Yao said, but in another context. When you're finished reading it, you'll wonder why we're even discussing Yao's foot. *Ahem*

Did I just say I was on my way to jail?
