Seeking additional center depth with Yao Ming on a strict playing time limit, the Rockets have offered free agent center Erick Dampier a two-year, $4 million contract, a person with knowledge of the offer said on Wednesday.
Dampier, who was waived by the Charlotte Bobcats on Tuesday, is also expected to consider a minimum contract offer from the Miami Heat and an offer from the Memphis Grizzlies.
The Rockets are also in talks with Utah Jazz restricted free agent center Kyrylo Fesenko, though the Jazz are expected to match the sort of salary-cap exception offer the Rockets could make.

What the F***ety F***?
Yao,Miller
Scola,Hill,Hayes,Patterson
Battier,Budinger,Jeffries
Martin,Lee,Taylor
Brooks,Lowry,Smith
is 15,all you are allowed.
Morey has to have a trade lined up or this makes zero sense.
<edit add>
Second thought,Lee or Taylor have shown staff enough to think they could play them at PG in an emergency. Damp gives Adelman offensive(Miller),defensive(Damp) options at C.
Nah,still makes little sense.

I don't understand what's the issue here. Adds depth to both the PF and C position. But.. you'know.

yeah, not a fan of erika... but i guess if he could help the team... and in all honesty yes he would be a solid back up center. he's a big body who can defend and rebound and he's okay on offense.
maybe houston's not convinced on miller being the back up center, i mean he is getting up there in age and if there was ever a situation where he would have to start, i wouldn't be too confident in him as a starter.
then chuck hayes as much as i love him, were not going anywhere with a 6'5 starting center. i mean i love him as a rotational player but he doesn't need to be starting.
I guess this is the ultimate security center. because if the unthinkable happens, and we need a starting center, erika would probably be our best bet.
yao/dampier/miller
scola/hill/patterson/hayes
battier/Buddinger/Jeffries
martin/lee/Taylor
brooks/lowry
that quite a depth at the big man position with jeffries able to play power forward as well. i don't have a problem with it...

I actually would like this move. A much more physical/tough option than what the Rockets have with Jordan Hill, not to mention he's still an above average defender and he makes really great cuts to the basket something that can benefit from playing with guards who can make the no-look pass.
In reality, he probably wouldn't see more than 4-5 minutes a game with Yao getting 24 and Miller probably around 20.
This move has to lead to a trade though that or Ish Smith is just here for training camp.

You wanted a big black guy and Dampy is one.

Why would no like this? He's got good size, and rebounds/defends well in the minutes he gets. He just never lived up to his contract, which wouldn't be issue anymore.

This tells me that Morey has very little faith in Yao this season. I'm thinking the strict 24 mpg restriction is serious and he probably won't play back to back. hmmm

dampier still can play, good for 15mpg. and w/ yao up to 24 minutes, he'll keep the inside defense going. not bad, but then why did we get brad miller for 15mil/3yrs? it'd be a waste to play brad for less than 18min. i was hopin for yao to play 28-29 by jan or feb. we defintely need more than 24mpg of defense in the paint. if damp is the only answer then oh well. artest and barns are now w/ LA, and erika knows he was never the 2nd best center in the nba.
i'd expect at least one of the pfs to be traded or wavied since there's 4 pfs backing up scola, and 4 of the pfs can get some burn at center. with dampier on the team, jeff and hill could be gone. scola, hayes and pat should be off limits

It's Erick Dampier. Not only is he an ex Mav, but he's Erick Dampier. Did Morey develop a cocaine habit or something. I can't think of a single way to rationalize adding Erick Dampier to the roster.

Yeah, the only reason it wouldn't really make sense was how much we invested into Miller, the quotes claiming Hill will have an extended role this season, so where would all the minutes come from. It's either, deep insurance for Yao (which isn't a bad thing), or as you said, stockpiling assets to consolidate that for an upgrade.

Grant Hill is the basketball Anti-Christ.
He's been on three teams and he's 3-3 on getting coaches fired, stars traded and Front Office turmoil.
He's been out of First Rd exactly once-that was last yr.
He turned down more money from Knicks because they wouldn't guarantee a starting job.

Really, I like it. Dampier is better than Miller by FAR, and he wasn't one of the Mavs that should bother anyone (especially given how his contract made for so many great jokes).
The part that bothers me is (as pointed out previously) that we have Miller on a 5m contract now, too.
Does this make Miller Morey's first bad contract, or was he brought on for other reasons?
