i need to get a new LCD for my computer. I dunno a whole lot about computers although that'll change soon (someone else chose my LCD). What features should i look for? Not too expensive, all i know is it has to be in the 100-150 range, 17+inch, VGA/DVI input, and of course HD

you only need the monitor?
all lcd is capable of displaying hd picture
it's just that your graphic card can handle it or not
better question
do you want 16:10 (standard pc size) or 16:9 (tv size)?
you can get a 19-20" around your price range
checkout dell outlet
i know outlet don't sound good but dell refurbished stuff got the same warranty as new
sometime it's actually new never open just return by customer
i scored a good deal on a used laptop for $550 (should be in $800+ price range)
cheaper price because it has a scratch on the top (which i can't see when i'm using it)
if you don't like it checkout newegg.com at least tax free for texas
we are 6 weeks away from black friday
if you can wait
wait a little while
i just hate shopping during black friday unless the price is really good
hate driving around looking for parking and wait hour in line

My brother just got a LCD for around your price range at microcenter. Check their weekly ads, they usually have pretty good deals. I would check out newegg too but some people like B&M just to have their product in hand and it's easier to return/trade. I wouldn't research it too much like TN panels, etc. No matter what you buy, even if it's a lot of money, it can break on you.
BTW what are you using it for? A lot of reading? Word processing? Photography?

i'll be doing other things on it but most importantly i need a good monitor for gaming/movies.

If you get one of the cheaper "TN" HD monitors, while they display HD resolution, they have really crap colors. Particularly the blacks. They look very flat.
This is what I have: Dell UltraSharp 2405FPW
Probably pricier than what you want but it has a better overall screen quality. Lots of inputs for game consoles too (HDMI/component).

dunno what tn is, but i think ur talking about contrast ratio? i get that but what does the ratio mean? 600:1, 1000:1 . the higher the better but what does ratio represent?

TN is the technology behind the panels. These are the cheaper ones. The contrast ratio is different, it's basically the range of blacks. Higher the number the greater the range better the quality.

No the resolution is lower and the contrast ratio is not that good. The higher the contrast ratio the better the "detail" or difference in white vs black. I'm not some panel scientist or guru, but before I bought my tv I was researching all the terminology. Higher ratio, along with higher resolution, will give you a crisper image and since you're gaming I'd get a screen with a fast response time. 2 ms i guess would be good.
Also, someone said above, you have to take into consideration of your video card. If you get a 1920x1200 screen but your video card's max is 1024x768, then you won't really get a good image on the screen. So see the max resolution of your video card and then make sure the monitor's optimal resolution can match up or surpass what your video card can output (just in case you upgrade your video card in the future).

craiglist is your friend. See what your video card is, what resolution it can output, and find a 19 inch monitor that goes with it should be easy peasy.
I personally buy most of my stuff second hand on ebay.

Get HP or Samsung. Both are known for their LCD monitor quality at a bargain price. Samsung is more expensive.
