Dampier no longer going to Rockets (Page 3)

Houston has been just one of many teams interested in signing free agent center Erick Dampier, and HOOPSWORLD has learned that they are now going to ultimately win his services. The former Dallas Mavericks center has been pursued by a number of team, including the Miami HEAT, Milwaukee Bucks, Portland Trail Blazers and Phoenix Suns, but the Rockets offered the best financial package, as well as a shot at being a part of a potentially-contending team.
The situation for the Rockets, of course, is tenuous at best when it comes to the center position. Yao Ming is easing his way back into the lineup after missing an entire season with a broken foot. His minutes are limited and he isn't able to play in back-to-back games, meaning the Rockets have only Brad Miller and Jordan Hill on nights when Yao is unavailable. Miller was an excellent offseason addition and is certainly a capable starter, but he can't play 48 minutes a night and if he were to get hurt the Rockets would really be in trouble.
Dampier is not, by himself, a championship piece, but he does understand how to run the pick-and-roll, which will help Rockets head coach Rick Adelman free up his lightning-quick guards on the offensive end, and he is also still a solid defender. He's the shot-blocking threat Houston loses with Miller in the lineup, and he's a much stronger deterrant than frequent center Chuck Hayes, whom the Rockets would prefer to use primarily at forward this season.

Honestly, this move is very baffling.
I don't understand how Dampier is going to get play time and I don't understand why he chose the Rockets knowing they are stacked 4-deep at center and power forwards.
C Yao-Miller-Hill-Dampier
PF- Scola-Hayes-Jeffries-Patterson
Damp gonna play 1 minute a night.

If we get Damp I seriously doubt Jordan Hill will be ahead of him in the center rotation. Don't be suprised to see Damp backing up Yao and Brad backing up Scola when Yao is available. On back to backs you could move Hayes to the backup pf spot and still have two seven footers playing center. This signing would go a long way in stopping the layup drill we had last night when Yao was out. It would also allow our perimeter players to be a little more aggresive on D. Plus, I feel we need someone who will lay the wood on opposing players coming into the paint. He brings an intimidation factor that we just don't have right now and I think he would help our defense greatly.

It's not just hoopsworld. He already agreed to join the rockets and it's erick dumpier..don't think he's gonna change his mind he's a vet. He's gna be a good defender and B.rad is not going to last a whole season on the bench anyway, he's gna have many sore nights. There will be injuries..and dampier seems like a more reliable body in terms of lasting the whole season.

You realize that the cbssports report is based on the hoopsworld report, do you?
Personally I don't want Dampier. I don't think he brings anything to the team the justifies sitting Miller & Hill. Also adding him would force the Rockets to either cut or trade Jermaine Taylor/Ish Smith.

Ish is just another quick little guard...he cant shoot and cant run the offense. Decent on fast breaks but is a dime a dozen. Id much rather have Erika Dampier than Ish or Taylor. Im tired of the layup drill already.
When was it ok to start quoting hoopsworld again?

sigh...I've been practicing this all morning.
"Erick Dampier is a Rocket; therefore, I support Erick Dampier. I will cheer for Erick Dampier because he is a Rocket. I will forget all that was and accept Erick Dampier into the fold, because he is a Rocket now. What came before no longer matters. Erick Dampier is a Rocket."
This has been an emotionally draining morning.

Great, we got the 2nd best center in the world. This acquisition will rightfully move Yao to the bench.

Nah, Ingram and Kyler are okay. But I usually stick with RealGM boards for nba news. The Knicks could have definitely used Dampier, but he'll definitely fit Houston's needs.

well at least he's a defensive big. and yao ming can dunk on him in practice. gonna be interesting to see if he works w/ this team. any locker room problems? could he change yao so that he starts dunking on everyone? he does that i'll forget the past and send him some flowers and thank you card.
all the prototype big black guys are contend w/ their teams so we weren't gonna get one in a trade. 35 years old...

Although i like this signing, i do worry about Dampier's willingness to give effort. Anybody remember Bonzi Wells? Supposedly we only signed him for half of what he thinks he's worth so he accordingly gave us only half effort.
Dampier just lost about 12 million this summer due to an incentive in his contract not being reached. If we only give him 2 million, thats about 1/6 of what he thinks he's worth. I'm afraid he may only give us 1/6 effort.
I mean athletes have really strange though process.
