OT - the 'ol Contraction/Relocation thread reborn!

Post#1 » by Mr. E » Sat Dec 25, 2010 2:50 am

I know that we're all supposed to hate LeBron for being the new villain (more evil than Lex Luthor, Doctor Doom and and the Utah Jazz combined); but his recent comments about exploring the idea of contraction had me agreeing with him on many points.

As a Houstonian who still feels the sting of the Luv Ya Blue Betrayal, I don't want to see fans in cities lose their teams. We know how much that sucks. But hypothetically speaking if the NBA does go into a lockout and they find themselves in an even bigger financial mess than we realize let's say that they do decide to shuffle the deck.

Here's your task: Get the NBA back down to 28 teams. This means that two must be contracted. I'm going to institute what I am calling the "Jazz/Mavericks Rule;" which means that you just can't contract a team because you don't like them. You have to have good reasons why you feel that the NBA could stand to lose the franchises in question.

Which leads us to the next part: You may also relocate up to 4 teams; but once again they must make sense.

Your assignment, if you choose to accept it, is:

1) Fold two franchises
2) Relocate 0-4 franchises
3) Do something nice for someone else

(just thought I'd throw that last one out there. ;) )

Grizzly and Honets easy reason they are not making Revenue and if we relocated a team I would do Toronto to either Seattle or Kansas City both are great Basketball cities, The nice thing I would Do is give Seattle the Raptors because we all know what it is like to loose a team!!!! F-c- you Bud Adams( I am still Bitter we could be the Oilers instead of the Texans) !! Merry Christmas everyone!!!!

Lebron is having to many Kanye moments. He is a great bball player but really needs to shut the he!l up. Contraction if left up to the natural business eb and flow is good. If players want to team up and owners want to pay them, super. But trying to force contraction by eliminating teams is like trying to stimulate the economy by tripling the nation debt. It just is a dumb idea. Fewer teams = fewer stars.

I hope Miami gets contracted and LaBrawn ends up in Toronto in the dispersal draft.
Harden is still a work-in-progress. He can score, but he can't help his teammate that much - Yao Ming

Obviously if you concentrate the Leagues best players in a few teams those teams will be pretty d*** good. Unfortunately the other teams will become the Generals and soon they will be in financial trouble as fans will only show up when one of the good teams come into town.
What the NBA needs to do is adopt much greater revenue sharing of local media and ticket sales revenue. But the owners don't want that part of what NFL does.
No one seems to be looking at the implications of a hard cap and reduced yrs on contracts. What incentive will there be for a FA star to stay w/a rebuilding team? The Miami example will look pretty attractive and we'll see stars under a hard cap, reduced contract structure start clustering together on a few teams.
Why would a Kevin Love stay in Minn when he can get just as much elsewhere?

As to LeBron's contraction comments, they'd make sense if the US population hadn't grown by some 30 million+ in the past quarter-century or so and if the NBA wasn't getting players from around the world instead of just the US.(It's not like Dirk keeps Dallas relevant,or Ginobili and Parker make the Spurs a contender :)

I wouldn't contract any teams but I would relocate 5. I was looking at a site that listed the 10 largest citys without an Nba Team and listed as follows:
San Diego, CA
San Jose, CA
Jacksonville, FL
San Francisco, CA
Columbus, OH
Austin, TX
El Paso, TX
Louisville, KY
Nashville, TN
Las Vegas, NV

I would Relocate
1. The Clippers to San Diego ( Although they lost the clippers in 84 this is a much better fit than being LA's red haired freckled step child who lives in the basement They can build an identity in SD

2. The Raptors to Austin TX Austin is the Capital of Texas as well as party central ( 6th street ) They have no other sports team and would in my opinion be another OKC

3. Grizzles to Louisville , KY This might be the easiest one Kentucky is Basketball Country and already is filled with rabid Kentucky Wildcat fans imagine if you could bottle that up for a NBA franchise, plus current grizzlie fans wouldnt have to travle too far to support their old team

4. Hornets to Las Vegas This one is kind of a wildcard but I have no doubt that vegas would support a Nba franchise 10 times better than NO plus the team already operates in a gambling state it wouldnt be too big of a change for them compared to another nba team

5. Timberwolves to Kansas City or St. Louis Missouri is another Basketball state that could support a pro team , Minnisota just dosent seem to support anybody these days
Que Psi Phi till the day i die
