Rockets to sign Marcus Cousin, release DeMarre Carroll

Post#1 » by x- » Sun Apr 10, 2011 4:36 pm

The Rockets have reached an agreement with former University of Houston center Marcus Cousin and will sign him to a three-year, non-guaranteed deal today, a person with knowledge of the move said.

Cousin, a 6-11 center who played briefly for the Rockets 2009 summer league team, was with the Spurs and Jazz this season. To make room for Cousin, the Rockets will waive forward DeMarre Carroll, a forward acquired from the Memphis Grizzlies in the trade that sent Shane Battier to Memphis.

Hasheem Thabeet, the other player acquired in that deal, will be recalled from the Rio Grande Valley Vipers with Cousin taking Thabeet’s spot on the Vipers roster.

Cousin, 24, played 18 minutes in four games for the Jazz on a 10-day contract this season.

I remember him from the pre-season game against the Spurs.

Makes good sense. Wrap up his rights and it costs basically nothing. You never know. he might work real hard in the 'extended' off-season and be able to contribute next year.

Very smart move. Low risk, high reward.

There two things I don't like about this.

1.He sounds like a knock off of DeMarcus Cousins

2. We traded Ish for no reason at all.... I hope we needed him in the trade to get that first rounder and just add Carroll in there kicks.

looking at his draft express stats, he looks like a jordan hill clone, or even worse - a poor mans jordan hill. but still not bad, cousin's size can be more useful than carrol's lack of size.

Yeah, basically.

It's pretty much the same thing the Rockets did last year when they waived Hilton Armstrong and signed Alexander Johnson to a unguaranteed two year deal.

The chances that Cousin will be turn out to be a player are rather slim and there's probably a good chance he won't even be on the roster next season.
The signing however gives the Vipers another body for their playoff run and the Rockets get another body for summer-league (should there be such a thing this year), as well as training camp.
Should Cousin turn out to be any good you got him locked up on a seriously cheap two year deal.

I like it.

nothing to talk about so we decided to make a thread on marcus cousin. his name alone has so much potential for conspiracy theories. is that name done on purpose? did the "cousin" and "cousins" families have a bad history? who started it, and for what purpose? was the 'de' and 's' in demarcus cousins used to seperate the two at birth? were the parents too lazy/stupid to just use a different name? why dont they change their last name? because it angers the original "cousin" familly? do they feel insulted their son's counterpart name is almost the same? why wasnt marcus cousin a high draft pick? did the "cousins" family have to do something with it?

and last but not least...is Marcus Cousin the Big Black Guy we've been looking for?

He's flying under the radar right now. Next season he opens up with a triple double - 7pts, 21rbs, 8stls, 17blks, 11asts. He's not gonna break records, he's gonna MAKE records.

"Cousin" is pronounced "Koo-zahn" (or at least that's how Bill Worrell was saying it in preseason)

How many blocks will Thabeet get in these last two games? I say 7 total.

Thabeet, T-Will and Jordan HIll to Clippers for DeAndre Jordan (sign and trade)

at least we get rid of some salary that way and Clippers get 3 young players in the last year of their rookie deals. (All 3 were top 11 picks in the 2009 draft).

I actually wouldn't be opposed to that. If we can keep Adelman or his system and DeAndre can actually pass the ball, then I would totally be for this. Cause that would mean Brad "The Slomosexual" Miller would be completely expendable.

that should be our main attraction for off season trading. "oh wats that? you already got an offer for roy hibbert? does that offer include not one, not two, but THREE LOTTERY PICKS? ya, i thought so. why dont u jsut send him over here so we can get this over with. ok, thanks, love you too, bye."

only houston can have 3 worthless lottery picks. basketball gods will never stop cursing the houston rockets.

in regards to deandre jordan, i will give you guys the most realistic scenario ...

before deandre jordan...

we need a big black guy
this is the guy right here tall, long, jump high
he's a major upgrade and he's exactly what were looking for
he will make the rockets so much better
he's whats available right now

after we sign deandre jordan...

we really need an upgrade at center, that's all this team really needs a center that can defend
deandre jordan can't defend for nothing, id rather start chuck hayes
all he does is block shots he can't actually defend.
he just need time to develop he has a lot of potential
he's the best we can get, we had to settle for him

i was never high on him. he's on a bad team and kaman's been injured all season. he's in his 3rd year so he has enough experience to know how to do something useful on the court. honestly i dont think he'll ever be more than a backup center, definitely a perfect backup center, but that's it.

we dont have much luck getting quality free agents. jordan might be the best we can get :( .

havent completely lost my trust in morey, still have a lotta good pieces on this team. i hope he pulls somethig out his ass this offseason. back to back winning records w/o making the playoffs will help.

problem with chuck hayes is we will always get kill on board
unless this is our roster, there is always room for improvement

C - Dwight Howard
PF - Dirk Nowitzki
SF - LeBron James
SG - Dwyane Wade
PG - Chris Paul

I feel you. DeAndre Jordan is far from a "sure thing". I would just be willing to part with the previous pieces because I see them as dead weight. That move would be a good way for us to consolidate talent, and open up roster spots for some improvement. I highly doubt he is the answer to our prayers. But he at least has much potential as anything we'd be giving up.
