Question about Coach Rick Adelman

Hi guys,

Lakers fan here...First of all, I hope I don't intrude, but I wanted to get your opinion on your former coach. I know he's obviously not coaching your team, so Houston management must not have been THAT enamored with him towards the end, but the guy looks like a solid coach.

I've always noticed that he's really been able to be quite successful with limited pieces at times, and that he has had some very good playoff experience; Also, I've heard that his players really seem to play hard for him. Anyway, would appreciate any input you guys have.

he is the absolute best free agent coach this offseason, and probably top 5-10 free agent coach of all time. i hope he doesnt go to LA, i dont hate them but I dont want him coaching there. if u do get him, dont get rid of him till he retires.

also dont be worried about his defense. he can coach defense if he has the players. there's nothing a team can do on defense if your starting center is shorter than the other team's starting small forward.

Adelman is a great coach.

There are different reports out there what exactly lead to Adelman's departure, but from I understand it came down to different philosophies on how to move forward.

Players love him and the majority of the fans wanted him back.

I think he'd be a great fit in LA.
The offense he runs is pretty similar to the triangle and the Lakers personal fits his offensive system very well.

As a NBA and basketball fan I'd love to see him go to LA, though as a Rockets fan I hope he goes somewhere East, as I do not want to see the Lakers succeed.

Really appreciate it, guys. Hahaha I can totally understand that you wouldn't want the Lakers to succeed. To be honest though, even with a great coach, I don't know that they're a lock to win it all anymore, and I'm a Lakers fan.

In my mind, I see he and Jeff Van Gundy as the only viable candidates. I like JVG's defense, but I feel that he would have some rust, since he has been announcing for quite a while. I would assume that you guys liked Adelman's tenure here more than JVG though?

JVG is a top-notch coach as well.

I can only speak for myself, but I consider Adelman a slightly better coach, though the difference between the two is probably rather marginal.
Totally different guys and coaching styles though.

I think that Adelman would fit the Lakers current roster better than JVG. Either one is a top-notch choice, tho.

As far as personnel goes, the Lakers still need a backup SF-backup PG- starting PG-backup SG.

What would you say is the ideal fit for those positions? Can Matt Barnes succeed at backup SF and Blake as backup PG?

Adelman doesn't need a traditional PG. So anyone that can shoot the 3 point will do at point. The most important thing for him is a passing big in the highpost. Pau Gasol and Lamar Odom fits that role perfectly with their ability to make play and shoot the mid range jumper.

Artest loves him.
Barnes played 43 games for him but got traded away from Sac.
He was Joe Smith's first NBA head coach at GSW.

So you have 2 or 3 players who have played for Rick already.

I wanted Adelman to coach Cleveland while LeBron was there. I think he's a great coach.

If Houston was able to produce the 3rd most points per game with their lineup including Hayes I'm assuming something like:

PG- Jack
SG- Bryant
SF- Artest
PF- Gasol
C- Horford

Could be pretty impressive?

Horford we're discussing mainly over Bynum or Gasol. Atlanta seems willing to offer Williams+Horford for Gasol while Bynum is mainly my throw-in.

Would Bynum fit in the role Chuch Hayes played in last season?

No. But Paul Gasol would.

Chuck was way more important to our team's success than people realize. Defensively he was our best player. Offensively he was our "Chris Webber"(minus the scoring prowess). He was the one who initiated the offense in the high post and made plays for others. When we started Yao and Scola we didn't really run Adelman's offense. It was mainly Yao in the post or pick and roll.

The offense didn't start to gel until Hayes started to get major minutes and we got Brad Miller. A Passing big is a MUST in Adelman's system.

Seems you guys would have had the #1 offense in the league if Hayes were say Pau Gasol.

Hard to believe the Lakers are considering a second round of Mike Dunleavy. Somewhat ironic since Phil Jackson won his first championship vs Dunleavy and the Lakers in 1991.

Horford is just turning 25 next month and had a decent postseason. I don't think they'd trade him for 31 year old Gasol. Gasol and Bynum together will make $34 million next year while Horford and Williams will make $19.5 million combined so that trade wouldn't work salarywise.

Gasol is 31. Atlanta would only make the trade horford for gasol if they believe gasol would make atlanta championship contenders which they still wouldn't be. they would be stupid to not build their team around horford, that's the one untouchable player in their roster. As far as bynum goes, he has yet to have one full productive season and is often injured. he is overrated and horford has been far more productive. There's no chance Horford ends up in L.A. unless the hawks gm is that naive.

Our main scoring option inside but his game has transitioned more and more to the mid range region. He's mostly a pick and pop option now.
