Lin and the corner 3

I think Jeremy Lin would benefit from becoming adept at the corner 3. Right now he's at 27.3% from downtown at 2.8 attempts a game. Ideally, he could increase his percentage by shooting from the most efficient spot outside of the paint or the line, not to mention that he becomes better playing off-ball.

FWIW, Tony Parker is having a career high in 3P% by shooting it from the corners, garnering him a 40.5% from 3 in 1.2 attempts per game.

I personally think that the corner 3 is the harder than any region beyond the arc.

Well, generally speaking, you are wrong. :) Usually it's pretty much the further away the shot the lower the shooting percentage.

Obviously spacing and spacing dead zones factor into this somewhat, too.

I remember when I started playing basketball I hated shooting from the corners, too.

Nowadays I don't mind it too much. I kinda feel like it's going in every time, in fact. I rarely find myself taking them, however.
Instead, I usually am shooting ridiculous inefficient long 2s. 8-)

The thing about the corner 3 is that you cant accidentally bank in a 3.

That accounts for %5 of my 3 point makes.

If you notice they are already trying to get Lin to spot up in the corners if he isn't initiating the play. The only issue with that is that he isn't all that great creating vs close outs in the corner. He sort of needs space to create and the corner is better for forwards who can finish over defenders at the rim vs close outs.

At the end of the day Lin has to become proficient enough at the 3 from outside the corners to compliment his drive game. The vast majority of players entering the league struggle with the NBA 3-point line and Lin is no different. As long as he doesn't get injured again and can work in the summer I'm pretty sure he'll develop at least an adequate 3-point shot.

The corner 3 is a more efficient long 2 though.

OOOOOOOOH SNap. He just called your BBIQ into question. He's saying you have questionable shot selection. Are you just gonna take that X?

You've got a valid point. But you know what, Lin's already acceptable at the corner 3. This year, Lin is shooting 36% from the "corner 3" vs 24% "above the break 3". However, a whopping 20% of Lin's shot attempts are "ATB3" vs only 7% attempts from "corner 3". Clearly, Lin needs to stop taking so many ATB3's and start taking more corner 3's.

http://www.nba.com/advancedstats/player ... 3;season=r

By the way, last year Lin was 46% from corner3 vs 29% ABT3. So it's obvious that Lin's ABT3 needs more practice in the offseason rather than keep shooting it during games hoping it'll fall in. Heck, it took Michael Jordan his 6th year in the league to crack 30% in 3 pt %, then he shot 35% from 3pt the rest of his career. So I believe that Lin can eventually improve his 3 like Parker and Jordan did, because Lin's FT% is good (unlike Rondo, who just can't shoot a jumper period), but it may take a few offseasons, he's not going to shoot his way out of it during the season.

i think the 3 is still out of his range right now...i'll take the long 2 from him instead.

Well, Lin's shooting 36% from mid/long 2, and also 36% from corner 3. So I'll take the corner 3. For sure, he needs to take less long 3's, I don't care how open he is.

I think the corner 3 is the easiest 3.. but I also don't understand the hate on long 2s. Good players can hit from anywhere.

Lin should be fine with practice. Jason Kidd couldn't shoot 3s at all and now that's his main weapon. I could see Lin becoming good from the corner with more seasoning.

HOW DARE HE DO THAT!

You can't show off your cool ISO moves shooting 3s, which in my case really would be a waste. You also don't get to post up and overpower people shooting 3s, so all this muscle of mine would be wasted as well. That's why I prefer taking them mid-range Js. 8-)

I know you guys were wondering about this -- I also don't draw many fouls. Jumping into people and flailing your arms like Kevin Martin or imitating contact on a non-natural-basketball move like James Harden is for the womens. I don't do that. That's also why a baller like myself can appreciate the true basketball talents like Joe Johnson or Monta Ellis. Monta Ellis have it all.

You ball like Monta Ellis and your sister look like Kate Upton? You are also from the future.

Life is not fair.

The shorter distance of the corner 3 is probably helping him, so when the opportunity is there he should of course take it. But I don't think PG's are going to naturally find themselves at the corner 3 spot that often. Also, it could be bad for getting back on defense if your PG is routinely spotting up at the baseline.

Better he improve his shooting ATB3, that will just make him more versatile overall. Especially with BayBaller's point above that Lin is likely better initiating from the middle of the court.
