Re: Best GM in league extended 4 years.
nice.
On a related topic, I just learned about the SportVU cameras that 10 teams in the NBA are using, including the Rockets of course. 25 times per second, it records the precise location of all 10 players and the ball. Analysts can mine that data to come up with virtually any metric you can imagine:
- rebounds in traffic vs uncontested rebounds
- rebounding radius
- potential assist (passes to an open teammate even if they miss the shot)
- secondary assist (pass that leads to an assist)
- a player's shooting percentage vs shot arc
- shooting percentage after taking 1 dribble
- shooting percentage when contested
- the total distance a player ran in a game
- a player's fitness (acceleration at beginning vs end of games)
Someone mentioned that Morey said that there was no good stat to measure perimeter defense. With SportVU, you should be able to have it calculate defensive stats only for when a player is outside 20 ft. Teams tend to be secretive about the metrics they've come up with, so we probably won't hear about whatever Morey's looking at.

Re: Best GM in league extended 4 years.
Salary cap wise he has done a great job. And his young team is fun to watch. Owner should be happy having him around, making profit.
But I am not sure he understands the game of basketball well. Think about it. Sophomore Parsons is the most tenured Rocket. How about building chemistry and trusting players? You think Rocket players see their future in Houston now? I very much doubt that. In fact everyone except Harden and Parsons won't be surprised when told "You have been traded away" Now people are talking about Rockets going after Dwight and Bynum while they already have a top 10 center in young underpaid Asik who is exceeding expectations and only getting better.
This is the time Morey should stop over-GMing. Be patient and let the young guy core of Harden-Parsons-Asik develop ffs and add missing pieces when opportunity is there.
What's the best move Morey have made? Trading for Harden was not his idea. OKC after getting rejected by GSW offered Harden to the Rockets. Drafting Parsons was his greatest accomplishment. I hope he won't be a cheap bastard activating player option in Parsons contract but instead pay him what he deserves! $900k per year is ridiculous. Sign him to a long term contract thiss offseason.
He is an above average GM but nothing special at this point. Future will tell.

Re: Best GM in league extended 4 years.
His best move is not just drafting Parsons but identifying value in players like Asik, who no one really could quantify and trust being a starting NBA center, finding superstar value in Harden and then locking him up to a max contract, believing in Lin being a good enough future PG to build around.
Most GMs would have been content to tank a few seasons and build around lottery picks, Jeremy Lamb etc but Morey has turned the team around from perennial mid-table franchise to within one home-run trade for perennial Western Conference contenders.
FWIW I think he's a better GM than Sam Presti. Morey wouldn't have choked on the Harden trade when his team was on the cusp of dynasty status while haggling over 4 million a year for a franchise caliber SG. He would have amnestied Perkins at the first moment and locked up Harden to keep that core together.

Re: Best GM in league extended 4 years.
The only GM I'd rate as being better is the three-headed hydra that is Buford/Popovich/Duncan.
Before you say it are you SURE Duncan isn't? He's been known to merrily impugns Popovich's desk for decision-overruling purposes. Even Popovich has said that he knows who the real boss is.
This... is the face of pure, calculating evil.

Presti seems to be close enough to be called on par with Morey, though. They've both had their small handful of whiffs. So far Morey's had fewer, but it's close enough.
On the other hand, Morey's cut both of them off at the knees...
Don't mess with MIT.
Edit: Seriously, I'm obviously an unabashed fanboy of Morey's, and it takes quite a bit of awesome to get me to gush. I'm generally a hypercritical bastard (albeit a nice one) who can see faults in just about everything. but Morey's missteps have been few, minor, and far between. It's REALLY hard to do that in dynamic systems. When he was hired on, I was slightly nervous about hiring a quant to be a GM, but he's acquitted himself smashingly.

Man, I love to read his NBA columns but Zach Lowe is irritating to watch on video.

I remember you from the general board or the T&T board with some sort of vendetta against Morey. If you are planning on coming to this board and behaving in that same way it is not going to happen. Bumping a thread that has not been active for over a month just to continue what you may feel to be unfinished business is not going to fly here. This is a textbook case of fanbase trolling and that is against the rules & regulations of this forum.
