POLL: Rockets Keeping Asik Because Josh Smith Unavailable?

Hawks fan here. Congrats on signing Dwight. I'm happy for you guys, but I have to say I'm very disappointed that the Hawks did not acquire Asik for Josh Smith in a follow-up trade. I was just wondering if Houston decided not to trade Asik
because Josh Smith became unavailable (when he committed to the Pistons), or if they reached that decision regardless of Josh (meaning that the Hawks never had a chance at completing the trade.) Thanks guys!

I heard that at one point as well, but I also heard that there was some interest between at least some of the parties (teams and/or players) in sending Josh to Houston after Dwight chose the Rockets since Josh* could help spread the floor with mid-range jumpers and the Hawks could have gotten something in return.

lot of rumors are make up story by media
Smith himself said Morey told him he's their backup plan
Howard himself said Morey didn't tell him about teaming up with Smith
so i believe Smith is just the backup plan and i also believe Morey isn't willing to give Smith 56M/4yrs contract

Thank you. That is helpful. I was trying to determine if our front office had missed an opportunity to obtain Asik or if the opportunity was never there. Looks like it may have been a pipe dream.

opportunity is probably there
but I don't think Morey is willing to give Smith 4 years 56 millions contract
Atlanta is probably asking for future picks or one of our young players as well

I hope we weren't. It would have been good to just get Asik. Instead, it looks like we got nothing since he is signing with Pistons.

that's why i believe Morey isn't offering the same/similar amount of money
if it's about the same Smith will rather play in Houston rather than Detroit or Smith isn't willing to be the 3rd guy

^ Good point. I would think it is more about the money than being the 3rd guy since he previously re-signed when we had Joe Johnson and Al Horford was beginning to emerge as more of a force than he had been before.

If ATL still wants Asik you can trade us Horford.

If we hasn't landed Dwight then I think the plan was to sign Smith outright, not a sign & trade. No Dwight and Asik is not being moved.

I think we were looking more to get some kind of return for Josh Smith than to trade away a core player like Horford who is locked into a contract already. Personally, I wouldn't trade Horford for Asik at this point because we need Horford's offense more than ever with Joe Johnson and Josh Smith gone.

1 word for poor Atlanta: rebuild.

it's not too late to engineer some kind of S&T with Detroit. You want Rodney Stuckey and Charlie Villanueva?

Rather than bring in those players Texas, I would have liked to rebuild as Moofs pointed out, but I wanted to do so with cap space for the 2014 free agency market, and a couple of meaninful pieces like Horford and Asik, which would have given us a niche as a great rebounding team with respectable interior defense. Recent signings may have killed that approach though.

You guys got Millsap though so if you got Asik then would you play Paul at the 3?

That is the main signing I'm referring to when I say it killed my hopes that we would proceed into 2014 with ample cap space and a couple of key pieces.
