Casspi the starting 4?

Post#1 » by tha_rock220 » Thu Oct 10, 2013 8:50 pm

He can hit open shots. He rebounded okay today. His defense is suspect. I hate the idea of a starting power forward not averaging so much as 5 rebounds a game, but he could definitely space the floor for Harden, Lin, and Howard. I think Howard will definitely help erase any defensive mistakes Casspi, or Harden, makes.

you want to keep Howard out of foul trouble
definitely do not want him to cover Casspi mistake
right now out of all 5 possible starting PF candidate
defense wise
Smith > Jones > Motiejunas > Casspi (based on guarding PF)
Asik = unknown
i really wish we can have Howard+Asik on the court at the same time

How quickly we forget how much PPat was hated on for his lack of rebounding... I really like TJones potential but his lack of awareness on defense is troublesome

I think Casspi can be matched up vs some stretch 4s. However, not many teams actually start stretch 4.

Phx started both Morris twins. That was nuts in a fun way. But yeah, PF by committee this year.

Also, anything is possible with McHale as the coach.

there is no such thing as foul trouble for howard since we have asik...

you want to play Howard 33-36 min not 24
Asik is unknown now since we haven't see him together with Howard on the court

Ppat's hate was unwarranted. He would be the undisputed starter on this team.

Yes because his defense was actually pretty good.

Patterson was great his rookie year, then sucked after that the next couple years due to injuries. Last year he started out poorly again, but then really caught stride. I agree he'd be the undisputed starter b/c his jumpshot is very good (and last year, expanded it three point range). But it's worth mentioning, that despite the fact he was a decent defender at times, our defense noticeably improved post all-star break.

Granted it's only been the preseason, but his rebounding hasn't been bad. He's been terrible on defense in the past, but that has been on terrible defensive teams.

offensively Howard/Casspi/Parsons/Harden/Lin is deadly
defensively Howard/Motiejunas/Parsons/Harden/Beverley is the best
Howard and Motiejunas need to stay away from stupid foul

Oh no, not the Patrick Patterson conversation again! Would he start on this team? Four year veteran Patrick Patterson would. Not rookie or second year Patrick Patterson. He only became a stretch four last year after he came back from his latest injury when people were saying that Marcus Morris should be the starter because he had better range and could spread the floor. Patrick came back with a vengeance and showed off the 3 pointer that he had been working on for years in an effort to regain his starter role. Too bad he didn't work on his rebounding with that kind of tenacity. He was strictly a midrange pop guy and we would roast the dude regularly for shying away from contact in the paint. I remember people calling him a power forward with no power and asking what good were all those muscles when he refused to use them? People forget that. Hell Marcus Morris would have a case to start on this team and he was a complete zero his rookie year. I believe Jones and D-Mo will be both be better overall players than Morris which isn't saying much and if they keep working, Patterson too. They need playing time, but unfortunately for them, that is going to be hard to come by on this team without first having tremendous impact in practice situations. They won't be given as much opportunity to learn on the fly.

As far as Casspi goes. I'm all for giving this guy an opportunity whether it be starter or key reserve off the bench. The more I see of the Howard/Asik pairing and the ability to keep a defensive anchor on the floor for the majority of the game the more I like it. Trading Asik for a stretch 4 that shoots 38% from the 3 point line and plays bad defense when you have Casspi on the team who can pretty much do the same thing at say 36% doesn't seem like a smart move. People worry about Casspi guarding guys like LMA, Blake Griffin, and Zach Randolph, but would Ryan Anderson do any better? Doubt it. Either would need a lot of help or you could go with your wild card in this situation which would be Howard at the 4 and Asik at the 5. Howard made Randolph his biatch a few times last night in that matchup and as soon as he left the game, Randolph started physically bullying guys.
