I ask a similar question in Player Comparison but unfortunately, nobody can really answer it.
I didn't really watch much of Houston Rocket game so wasn't sure.
Decided to ask here.
Do you guys think Yao was truly treated unfairly by the referee?

How far his stats will increase?

yes, all big men are treated unfairly
small guard getting touch it's automatic foul
big men they get hacked and push and yet no foul call for them

I agree with Max. NBA refs have always been bad about officiating Big Men - especially the very talented ones like Yao.
We saw it with Hakeem, we saw it with Shaq. NBA Big Men are held to a different standard all too often.
I do not believe that Yao was specifically singled out.

If every it was called every time Shaq got fouled in 2000 he'd have shot 20 free throw a game. Yao got fouled a lot, but his finesse game didn't do him any favors with the calls. I would say he was about as unfairly called as Shaq.

JVG was trying to promote the "verticality rule" with Yao. Recently, Hibbert kind of inherited the benefit of that.
But, the NBA is really inconsistent with the physicality. The Rip move is another BS that some players get the benefit and some don't.

What about other big man who are power forward like Tim Duncan and Dirk Nowitzki. Did they get treated unfairly too?

It's still amazing how that you breathe on a guard and its a foul... Yet when you hack big men its like "Oh Hey No Contact there..."

Beyond just the bigs, NBA officiating has all kinds of problems. It is what it is though.
I've long wanted the NBA to eliminate the foul out rule or at least simply let a team decline FTs in favor of a new possession. That way teams can't use fouling as an advantage or strategy, especially at end of games. In my mind, there is nothing worse than watching the final 2 minutes of an NBA game turn into 20 minutes of FT shooting.
If the foul out rule was eliminated, then the team foul penalties would have to become harsher.
