Beverley, who spent parts of five years playing overseas before joining Houston last season, outplayed Lin throughout the preseason, drawing rave reviews from Rockets coaches and the local media.

McHale, who proclaimed during the preseason that Houston has "two starting point guards," has said he would not disclose his opening-night starting lineup until Wednesday evening, hours before the Rockets play the Charlotte Bobcats.

"I haven't had the fortune to play in the NBA on opening night," Beverley said, according to the Chronicle. "This will be my first one. I am definitely excited."

Lin said earlier this week that he "would love to start" but that he will accept a lesser role.

Lin and Beverley were on different trajectories last season.

After averaging 13.4 points, 6.1 assists and 3.0 rebounds per game in the regular season, Lin slumped to 4.0 points, 2.0 assists and 2.0 rebounds in the playoffs. Beverley went from 5.6 points, 2.7 rebounds and 2.9 assists in the regular season to 11.8 points, 5.5 rebounds and 2.8 assists in the postseason.

The "better fit" narrative died. It's now full blown "Beverley beat Lin" narrative from every sports media.

Thank you McHale for undermining your players.

Did not watch much of the preseason but saw Lin losing his starting job at somepoint in time last year. Not sure how this is Mchale fault when Bev outplayed Lin but not sure if that is true since I really did not care about the preseason.

I'm really glad for Beverly, but the real problem is lost trade value for Lin. With reduced time/role will come reduced trade value and his contract is sizable.

At least this way all pressure is off Lin and he can just play and set up his guys for easy buckets.

McHale's fault because he let the media take control of the narrative.

McHale could easily just say that Lin is needed on the bench, or even better yet that Beverley is better.

Instead he make up some mock contest with preseason performance on who will start the regular season.

McHale was scared after the Philippines game, it made him look like the bad guy. It resulted in Parsons having to "leak" the starting line up.

it is Rockets staring PG curse

aaargh!!!!!!!!!!!!

first Brooks beat Alston
then Lowry beat Brooks
then Dragic beat Lowry
then Lin beat Dragic (Lin was the 3rd PG in preseason)
and now Beverley beat Lin
who will be next?

MKL maybe you should take a break from basketball for a while... this obsession with McHale can't be healthy.
Bev and Lin both played well I suppose.
But imo Beverley has improved more so than anyone else on the team.

Hey McHale is also the guy who started White LBJ over Budinger when everyone said Budinger was way more talented. Only difference is Lin so far doesn't have Bud's pissy attitude.

If you think this puts pressure off Lin, you're wrong. This will end up in a no win situation where if he performs, critics will say that Jeremy was a better fit with the 2nd stringers. If Jeremy struggles, critics will say that Jeremy was a fluke.

They are already doing this. Every sports publication is saying that Beverley won over Lin. Disregarding the injuries and any statics that backs up Jeremy.

It's confirmation bias to the extreme.

End of this year Canaan will take over... It's inevitable.

this article is misleading
if you didn't watch the game you would believe everything it said
Lin was injured during playoff that's why he wasn't starting
like Beverley suddenly playing more min in playoff will not boost his stats
why no one say anything about Thompson or Faried coming off the bench?

I might take a break, because fanaticism isn't good for anybody.

I also like Beverley, he's a really good undersized SG. He does the 3D, shoots 3 and defends. He's a good fit with Heroball Harden.

As for Chase vs Chandler, Chase got paid and got hurt. It's too much of apples and oranges as reference to Jeremy.

Well it's a long season and Lin will have plenty of time to show his worth. I just think Beverly has been THAT good and deserves the nod. Personally I would have stuck with Lin because Beverly is so terrifying to second units, but I have no problem with this either.

To be totally fair, Lin is probably going to be traded because of his contract so it makes sense for Capt Beverly to get the keys.

I'm fine with this. Whoever is playing the best should start. I was impressed by Beverly, and Lin will bring some needed offensive spark to the second unit with Asik staying in games when Dwight goes out.

If Lin starts out playing Beverly, it's fair to switch roles back. If both are accepting of a healthy competition to help win games for their team's success, I think it's great.

I agree to your logical conclusion. If that's how the momentum plays out this season.

Asik/Howard, Lin/Harden, It make sense for at least 1 more trade.

Also, someone mentioned Casspi out playing Parsons and should get the start. /chuckle

I have no problem with people wanting Beverley in the starting lineup, because their are valuable reasons. He might be a better fit starting, and Lins playmaking and shot creating is more needed with you guys second unit, but the way it's being spun by the media and hater fans is BS. Par for the course with Lin, the dude will never get the respect of the masses, it seems.

I think Bev and Lin will do great this year. It would be smart of McHale to make sure both get 27-32 minutes a night.
