Magic Fan here; Dwight's Post Moves

Post#1 » by J the Drafter » Fri Nov 15, 2013 5:17 am

I understand that Howard was recovering from injury when he was with the Lakers, but has he really been so bad on the low block with you guys that it's counterproductive to pass it to him down there? The Magic never had issues going to him in the post.

Dwight doesn't get way with lowering the shoulder or even a chicken wing elbow anymore. This nullifies his strength in the low post.

i think the rockets are doing a bad job

they need to give howard the ball on the move try to find a way howard can have as many dunks as he can , they are posting him is not his game . one of the reasons i think they are posting him is because hakeem is teaching him some moves and they think he getting better at it but thats not his game hes not olajuwon hes not a good post player
fire morey please ,the sooner the better.....ryan Anderson is a 3 not a 4

Thanks. Someone had actually mentioned what you told me, but it's crazy to see Dwight go from relatively unskilled post player who still gets it done to someone who should apparently be avoided on the block. Best of luck, btw. I have no desire for Dwight to fail.

Dwight literally has no post moves. He simply tries to back his man down or just tries to get a first step with a dribble. No fakes, no touch, no nothing. And everybody is flopping against him when he tries to back people down and are getting the calls. It's ugly. The hilarious thing is Dwight has been most effective passing out of the post when they double him, and it amazes me why teams even do that to begin with.

They sold him on featuring him in the post to lure him here.

Thats fine. Give him his touches and coast the regular season. But that garbage needs to stop in the playoffs.

dwight is having huge problems but the rockets as a team are having a pathetic start to the season, so thats gonna reflect on dwight. until they start playing more consistent team ball at their highest level, dwight will have problems.

in the doulbe ot gave vs the raps, he only scored 2 pts after the 1st half. two points. 10 extra minutes of game time. thats one minute short of 35 minutes he could only put up 2 points.

this team has long ways to go, but tonight vs the knicks made some improvements. i cant say im 100% confident this roster can get to the 2nd round. maybe after trading asik, assuming he isnt sick, will give us what it needs.

Personally, I'd like to see more pick and roll plays with Dwight as he's a fantastic finisher at the rim for a center.

But I recently watched his highlights from 2010:

One thing that sticks out to me is that he had much better touch on his hook shots. I also saw a tim duncan backboard jumper once.

He looks the pretty much the same skill wise as now, but he had greater range of accuracy with his hooks from this small sample of plays then versus this early season.

Here's another one and probably a better example:

Look how far out (versus so far this season) he can hit that hook with accuracy, as well as those backboard shots, his touch is better.

I think this might be correctable if he focuses on his hooks from deep in the paint to low/mid range in practice with greater repetition. I think his footwork looked slightly better then too, which is also correctable.

He did it before and he could potentially do it again I think with work.

dwight is bullying his defender down in the post...so offensive fouls galore! he got away with it in his past orlando days, but i think the refs have changed the way the calls are made nowdays. he gets at least 2 traveling calls too.

when he starts backing down his defender, would like to see a jump hook or something. he tries to overpower his defender, but that isn't gonna work consistently...once he gets in deep enough, he should just go with a jump hook.

Dwight's definitely sucking this year.
I wouldn't call our start pathetic, so much as extremely poor given our talent, but it's partly to be expected when changing stars. Not everyone played together in college like Hakeem and Clyde.

good video from shaq , barkley, and kenny on tnt last nite discussing howard and showing tips on how to setup post up and stuff...lol at barkley saying he used to intentionally get 3sec calls if the guards don't feed him the ball.

Dwight not getting any respect from the refs on the offensive end. Dwight does however get away with some goal tending that turns into blocks.

But to be honest, the NBA is not letting any bigs bang down low this year. Marc Gasol's stats have dropped too. Memphis is in big trouble with their big front court.
