Is Asik Actually Injured or Just Sulking? Still Want Him?

Post#1 » by ChokeFasncists » Thu Feb 6, 2014 11:27 pm

I'd like to see D12's minutes go down a little bit. DMo is doing well but our D still drops off a lot when Dwight's off the floor. It'd be tough to trade Asik because we don't have a glaring weakness on the team besides the backup center position. (some say Garcia but we'll see, maybe he's just cruising till the playoffs?) So we probably a center back. Another problem is the poison pill.

What do you think?

he;s sulking. a swollen knee doesnt last that long. 2 months about? heysoos christo how much time does he need

i still want him. its not often u get two elite defensive/rebounding centers on your team. but if we can trade him for something good in return im all for it. we do need a backup center who can play some defense tho. no one other than dwight would be able to protect the rim. since we dont have any lockdown perimiter defenders we need a good defensive big in the paint

btw rockets have a few glaring weaknesses. a starting caliber pg. bev/lin are looking good now, but im gonna wait and see if they can keep it up. rockets have been wildly inconsistent.

I hear ya, but I'd imagine a lot of guys keep playing with swelling in their knees.

Agreed, but sounds kinda tricky to trade a starting caliber center for a good backup center? Factoring in the poison pill.

You're still not convinced that given the opportunity Jeremy can be a starting caliber PG? I mean, he plays bad, not so good, inconsistent for a while, then suddenly when the opportunity arises, he pours in 18/8, 18/7, 15/10/11, winning three straight games. Is that not evidence that he probably could grow into a starting caliber PG? He is still quite green in this league, he is not great at the moment but I wouldn't call that a glaring weakness.

Agreed. As much as I like Asik as a player, it wouldn't be fair to the team if he's not going to be putting in 100%. I think he's made it clear to McHale/Morey that he doesn't want to be here so they should know what to do....I'm going to be really angry If Morey doesn't pull the trigger and Asik ends up half-assing it the rest of the way.

I keep telling ppl over and over our backup C issue is huge... there's a 14 pt dRtg differential when Howard sits... that's crazy! We need Asik to play nice to have any chance of getting far in the playoffs. The whole Lin/Bev debate is moot. At worst they are average. The difference be avg and great isn't as big as terrible and great.

I think there's a chance Asik plays nice to get his trade value back up, but I remain skeptical. Regardless he's not in the Rox long term plans so Morey needs to fill this gap sooner or later.

an average backup who only defends and rebounds and get garbage pts. doesnt have to be anything great. none of our bigs besides dwight can protect the rim. not mandatory, if we can get a lockdown defender who can shoot the 3, or w/e something else that gives this team a boost im for it. but w/o a backup center who can protect the rim, i dont know about this teams chances int he long run. spurs have td and splitter, pacers have ian and roy, thunder have ibaka and perk. unless u can make up for ur lack of size like the heat, teams need someone off tghe bench who can protect the rim.

i didnt word that out right. im sold that lin can be a starting caiber pg, but it cant be on a team where the sg does most of the ball handling. if lin and bev can show some consistency then rockets dont need a starting pg.

LOL I thought this thread was about Asik and it becomes another debate about Lin v. Bev.

I'm actually liking Motiejunas as the backup center. Yeah I know his rim protection is weak but I see effort and I think if Greg Smith can recover fully I wouldn't mind those two as the backup for Howard while shipping Asik for a non center like Kyle Korver.

im too lazy to read this thread but to be clear im not takling about lin vs bev. im talking about lin AND bev being effective pg tandem

motie and smith are better than nothing at center. they bring hustle and energy and will move around. most pple didnt see it last season but motie was very active on the d end last season. he rotated, stopped penetration, contests shots. not a beast shot blocker but he's still brings something on d. u can call him a white and bigger greg smith, cuz they both rack up fouls.

Agreed. The problem is, Asik is not much above "an average backup who only defends and rebounds and get garbage pts. doesnt have to be anything great." That's where it gets tricky. Which team has a good center that essentially does the same thing as Asik but would want an upgrade and take the poison pill and give us more? (Morey seems to want a lot for Asik)

Cool, that's true. But in that case we won't need a real good PG, a guys like Chalmers would do.

Na, na, we're talking about highly relevant topic of team need/weakness if we were to make a trade, our conversation is still within the realm of the thread, thankfully! 8-)

Not bad, but main problem is, Harden and Parsons have the wing position logged up, forty plus minutes per game, and we now use a lot of three guards lineup with Bev, Lin and Harden. Seems to me kinda a waste to get Korver, especially since his D isn't particularly good.

Hopefully we'll see soon enough, but like you said Asik would seriously improve a lot of our defensive and rebounding problems off the bench. I seriously think if we were to trade him that we'd have to try to get some sort of defensive anchor (in a bench role) back.

Elton Brand is averaging 1.2 blocks per game in only 15.2 minutes per game off the bench for Atlanta.
Asik + Garcia traded for Korver + Brand works for me.

Good.

Keep it that way.

My personal hope is that Asik comes back and buys in for at least this season. I do not think that Morey will get an offer he will consider to be fair to make a move this season.

I WANT ASIK. A Lin/Motie/Asik/Garcia/Casspi is the best 2nd unit in the league, and better than half the playoff teams in the East this year.

Going into the play offs and not having to worry that foul trouble will change our teams defensive make up is fricking huge. Now that both Motie and Jones are balling, our front line looks good as it stands. If Asik helps the team win, then all transgression will be forgotten. Hell, he'll forget he was ever unhappy.
