Ranking Playoff Coaches in the Western Conference

Post#1 » by ChokeFasncists » Sun May 11, 2014 8:28 pm

1. Pop
2. Carlisle (very close to upset even though he has bad defensive talents)
3. Joerger (Grizz would have beaten Thunder without the suspension for the lil push)
4. Brooks (great D)
5. Mark Jackson (would have advanced with Bogut, but angered owner's son...)
6. Stotts - Doc (can't decide, horrible depth vs great depth)
8. Hornacek (Sloan clone, jury still out)
9. McHale (can't advance with superior talents and happy stars; it's now Morey's responsibility)

Mark Jackson has been fired and they're looking at:
Thibodeau, Steve Kerr, Stan Van Gundy; Lionel Hollins, Mike D'Antoni, George Karl, Jerry Sloan, Fred Hoiberg and Kevin Ollie, and assistants David Fizdale, Alvin Gentry and Nate McMillan

The Lakers fired MDA and are looking at:
George Karl, Jeff Van Gundy, Mike Dunleavy, John Calipari, Kevin Ollie, Derek Fisher :o , Steve Kerr, Kurt Rambis, Byron Scott, Roy Williams

Adelman retired and the Wolves are looking at:
Tom Izzo, George Karl, Stan Van Gundy, Jeff Van Gundy, Fred Hoiberg, Flip Saunders.

The Jazz fired Corbin and are looking at:
Ettore Messina, Jim Boylen, Lionel Hollins, Mike Longabardi, Steve Kerr, Jeff Van Gundy, Fred Hoiberg.

Monty Williams is also pretty good. The Knicks are most likely gonna hire Kerr.

Let's hope they don't hire the all best ones so we have choices next year; or maybe they hire all the good ones except Jerry, so we have to hire him. Or maybe Jerry wants to rest for another year and Morey already knows that? He would be one year older. Some say McHale has no responsibilities except for pleasing purposes, well, that's not the case for other good teams, could that work?

Sooooo....an "I hate McHale" thread?

I have to admit, I like how you skipped Lin's roster #7 and went from #6 to #8, making McHale #9!

I cannot disagree with your rankings, tho. From what I saw our team did seem to be very out-coached.

That said - our coach was not our only problem in that series. A lot of blame to go around.

....and I'd be remiss if I didn't take advantage of a thread like this to say something like Jay Vee Gee. ;)

Well, I wouldn't call this hate, just pointing out his incompetence relative to his counterparts in our competitions now and next season. It's extra frustrating knowing that Morey makes a conscious decision to bring him back......And I'm also looking at the pool of available coaches this and next season. Or maybe he hires a great assistant and becomes a great coach next season? One could only wish!

:o    I swear, it's absolutely a coincidence! It's just hard to choose between Stotts and Doc. Doc is obviously doing a better job but his bench is so much better! You're thinking too much now!

Thx. 8-) Well, he takes most of it IMHO.

Well, if we do want to hire him and we wait till next season, the ball might not in our court anymore.

I actually agree with these rankings.

I want to get a top defensive assistant, so a guy like Hoiberg or someone mentored from a strong defense or head coach would be fine with me.

I also am very intrigued by Messina, but a coach of his success level would never be an assistant, he would also be a gamble at head coach as well for a contender.

Looks like they're cleaning house with a changing of the old guard:

http://blog.chron.com/ultimaterockets/2 ... 23049101=0

But that brings me to something that a lot of you guys are missing with respect to McHale, which is he's Morey's guy. He gives Morey complete control over personnel and let's him put in his own assistant coaching staff in place. And it's not a coincidence that the assistant coaches Morey has hired are in alignment with his ideal offensive system. The pick-up of McHale's option and this "changing of the guard" is only further evidence of Morey's line of thinking.

So people hoping Morey is going to hire one of the "old-school" available coaches out there, even next year, are going to be sorely disappointed. These old vet coaches are not going to relinquish control of the team to Morey, and are going to want to bring in their own assistant coaching staff. All evidence points to Morey promoting one of the assistant coaches he put in place (Chris Finch anyone?) after McHale's contract runs out next year.

I've said it many times. McHale is a figurehead. Why he gets the hate he does I don't know. It's like hating on the queen of England for Europe's economic woes. Morey is essentially running the team through the assistant coaching staff.

That's what's sad about it as well. The fans are tired of the Morey experiment, they will demand consistency from the lineups, not a new flavor of the month player which then gets sent to the doghouse if he doesn't shine. Morey likes to sign these "gems" for McHale to experiment with and then thrust into the limelight if they like him (Beverley, Daniels), while shelving the lemons (Casspi, Hamilton). How about surrounding our key players with veteran role players instead like other championship caliber teams do?

This formula and ego of Morey's will not take this team to the next level. The players don't respect the coach and are lost on the court during critical situations :( And because our lineup is never consistent, we don't get to gel and play team ball just ask the Blazers the difference between our offense and the Spurs offense, not to even mention our pathetic D lol.

I agree with the above poster who said that Morey's neck is on the line next year if we underperform.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe due to our cap situation this year we were not able to sign anyone above league minimum as we had no MLE. Next year we do however, so I do expect a FA or two that is going to actually have an impact.

Cooper actually worked for McHale in Minnesota? Interesting who's gonna replace Cooper and Sampson.

Dang, that is not very good. I can trust Morey the dealer but Morey the coach? That'd be like Dolan being GM and coaching, overreaching? I hope Morey lightens up and hire someone who can coach and learn to work with him. One purpose of this thread is to show that no other successful team has this kinda setting where the head coach doesn't do much. And it's not like Morey is Pat, Phil or Red. IMO this crap isn't working very well. On the other hand, so is it Morey who decided to start TT and against starting the best 5 and then in the playoffs start TT. This kinda secrecy is very confusing. All in all, this year is on McHale from what we know, and if Morey is the puppet master behind the scene then it's on Morey, but we won't find out. But next year, if it's the same crap, it is definitely on Morey no matter what.

I dunno, but:

I heard the cap is higher than expected or something?

Update on the available coaches situation:

So Kerr went to GS instead of NY. GS was the only team linked to Jerry, so that's good.

Bad news tho, is that one of the wanted VeeGees, SVG is gone, snatched up by the Pistons. So no reunion of D12 and SVG here.

Now who is Phil gonna hire?

Scottie Pippen. He has as much coaching experience as Kerr.
Harden is still a work-in-progress. He can score, but he can't help his teammate that much - Yao Ming

For what team? Hakeem is not an assistant coach in any official capacity and neither is Pippen.

I don't count that as coaching nor Olajuwon's working out with Dwight, even if they are paid.
More like consultants.

Coaches work with the whole team (or in NFL parts of the team) and sit on the bench during games.

Lue is a former Rocket. He came here with TMac and Juwan Howard.

It doesn't matter really, Phil Jax is gonna take over the team.

Return to Houston Rockets
