I come in peace, I promise -- Parsons related

Post#1 » by Texas Chuck » Wed Jul 9, 2014 11:45 pm

Hopefully some of the Trade board regs can vouch for me that this is not any kind of trolling attempt.

Curious what you guys make of this huge Parsons deal.

Will you match?
Can you match considering the timing of everything(I am not a CBA expert by any means but his cap hold goes up to $15M as soon as he signs?)
Would you match at this dollar figure if it didnt hurt other plans?
Do you feel betrayed by Parsons signing this?

Just wanted to get the Rockets take on this. Im pretty excited about potentially getting him, but am stunned at the amount of the contract. Seems like an overpay.

Morey has a few hour to get Bosh. But he would have to clear cap by trading Lin right now.

By the end of the today, Parsons' cap hold goes up to 15 mil. Which would eat all the cap space.

Morey can choose to not match Parsons, then the cap space will be cleared for another FA, maybe Bosh.

So, it's almost impossible now to match Parsons' huge contract. It would have been 21 mil on the Rockets salary as Luxury Tax anyway.

thats too much and he doesnt play defense anymore. deng or ariza are better options. more than likely to sign for less. this team has needs to fill out if they wanna contend. matching the offer sheet makes it impossible.

His Cap Hold is still his original QO which is about $2.8.
We have 3 days to match from the time he signs and sent in to the league which cant be done till midnight. his cap hold remains the same till we match then it goes to whatever he signed for.... so in theory we have 3 days to clear cap and sign Bosh then we match and screw the Mavs back for tying up their cap space for 3 days
LeBron should have a decision in the next couple of days (he does not want to go to Brazil without an answer) and so we should get a Bosh answer soon as well.
This could help us by putting pressure on Bosh to take that max deal when he can (his agent did call around to check for deal meaning he does want one).

not angry at Parsons... they spent all day negotiating and couldnt come up with a contract so he used his option and now the. Rockets use theirs... this could be much worse a year from now if he went to UFA.

I know you aren't a troll chuck

I don't blame parsons for getting his money after being severely underpaid the last few years....I just wish he wouldn't go to Dallas

All I wanted if he left was to avoid Dallas Utah and Los Angeles :(

That's a lot of money for him, though....I'm always gonna root for him even if he leaves us for Dallas

On Parsons and Bosh:

When a team is given an offer sheet, they must have “Room” to match at time given sheet up until actually matched. (Or, probably bird rights as well..)

Article 7, Section 4, (d):

The ROFR Team, upon receipt of the Offer Sheet, may exercise its Right of First Refusal, which shall havethe consequences hereinafter set forth below in this Section 5. In order tomatch an Offer Sheet, the ROFR Team must have Room for the player’sPlayer Contract at the time notice of the Team’s exercise of its Right of First Refusal is given and must continue to have Room at all times theFirst Refusal Exercise Notice remains in effect.

Room can either be actual salary cap space or a specific exception:

Article 1, Section 1, (fff):

“Room” means the extent to which: (i) a Team’s then-current Team Salary is less than the Salary Cap; or (ii) a Team is entitled to use oneof the Salary Cap Exceptions set forth in Article VII, Section 6(c), (d), (e),(f), (g) and (j) (Disabled Player Exception, Bi-annual Exception, Non- Taxpayer Mid-Level Salary Exception, Taxpayer Mid-Level Salary Exception, Mid-Level Salary Exception for Room Teams and TradedPlayer Exception)

In figuring out whether there is cap space the cap hold used becomes the amount signed on the offer-sheet if its greater than the alternatives:

Article VII, Section A, IV, (D) (ii):

With respect to each Veteran Free Agent who last played fora Team who is a Restricted Free Agent, the greater of (A) the Free Agent Amount (as defined in Section 4(d)below) attributable to such Veteran Free Agent, (B) theSalary called for in any outstanding Qualifying Offertendered to such Veteran Free Agent, or (C) the Salary called for in any First Refusal Exercise Notice (as defined in Article XI, Section 5(e)) issued with respect to such VeteranFree Agent.

So what does this all mean? It means that the Rockets can not sign Bosh and Parson’s once the Notice is issued. Assuming issued means it is actually served, then the Rockets can sign both if they avoid service of the offer sheet prior to officially signing Bosh because although they won’t “room” to match the offer, they will have bird rights.

Parsons' cap hold increases to 15 mil as soon as Parsons sign the offer sheet.

His cap hold does not go up. Only when rather if they match it will it go up.

This is a overpay and hoping Deng stays with his 12 per or Ariza who I think will likely be cheaper than both.

Really thinking he will not match the offer Chuck, and you is a good guy

It's called a cap hold for a reason. As soon as the Parsons sign the offersheet and it gets sent to the NBA. The cap hold increases to the first year of the contract.

Pretty much July 10th is the day paperwork officially start being processed. Morey is running just about out of time. He has until the rest of today to perform some miracle.

Appreciate that, but I wanted to be clear considering Im a Mavs Mod and we just potentially put a big crimp in the Rockets plans. I wanted guys here to know Im a legit poster and wasn't showing up to gloat in anyway.

I'll admit to getting pretty excited about the possibility now, but I still feel like Morey had prepared for this possiblity and has a plan in place. The big question for me is if Bosh, Melo, and Lebron are all off the board would he spend FA money on a lessor option and then match Parsons or will he simply let Chandler go saving room to pursue the likes of Love/LMA/Dragic next summer?

If I was making the rules, the cap hold should be 15 mil on the Mavs for the 72 hours that HOU has a chance to match. The Mavs is offering the contract first. Then HOU can choose to take that contract and the cap hold.

The first domino will be the Lin trade. Technically, HOU doesn't have the space for a max contract.

Parsons Bird Rights is a separate issue.

You're always welcome here (despite your dirty, dirty, dirty Dallas ways!)

As a big fan of Parsons I hope that you believe my next statement:

I think that Cuban let personal feelings factor way too much into this offer. There is no doubt that Parsons would be a great addition to the dirty, dirty Mavericks...but damn, man...that price?

It's one thing for Houston who is all-in on the current team to overpay to keep the guy who is a known commodity here and has a pretty defined role...but we are living in a world where Channing Frye is getting 8M a year in his new deal. No matter who ends up where, I get the feeling that we are speeding towards another lockout/strike of some kind.

Thanks for the welcome despite my Dallas stink.

I think its an overpay too. I think he should probably get around $10M per and I wouldn't really have batted an eye at $12M especially the way the market has played out so far.

Not sure if its a personal thing with the Rockets or not. My guess would be that Cuban/Donnie felt like he was the best option available and decided to money whip him knowing they had to in order to lure him away.

Im mainly stunned he agreed because it was my perception that he loved it in Houston and would give the team time to use their cap space knowing they would take care of him on the back end. Not sure what changed, but maybe you guys can shed some light? Was it fear Houston wouldnt have money left for him and he didnt want to get caught without a seat? Or was it simply he couldnt walk away from a deal that pays him the max for two years and then gives him an opt out to sign another big contract? Dirk? Mad about how Lin was treated?
