Is McHale the Worst Coach in Rockets History?

Post#1 » by CoolbeansB » Thu Jul 17, 2014 4:39 pm

It seems like he has no plays to run whatsoever.
He is extremely slow to react to anything that is going on during games. Almost as if he is asleep.
I don't even think the word defense is in his vocabulary :banghead: .

If he is not the worst, then who is?

Rockets have been blessed with great coaches at least as far back as I can go Rudy T, JVG, Adelman, then guys like Bill Fitch & Del Harris if McHale is the worst its the worst of a great group.

This guy has put up with so much roster change every year and still gets the team in the win column, albeit with Howard/Harden now that isn't too hard to do.
Of personality alone he is my favorite, the guy is hilarious and if he does get fired next year I hope to see him back on tv along side CWebb again.

Posting for the lolz... guys passing to Dwight's ankles, clowning on Jones for not wanting to boxout, this **** is hilarious. Cap space don't put up points... lol

"Flexibility doesn't score" seems to sum up McHale's term as GM quite nicely.
Morey 2020.

Well McHale was able to do one thing Morey hasn't been able to as GM, trading for Kevin Love.
Harden is still a work-in-progress. He can score, but he can't help his teammate that much - Yao Ming

Good post and I too think he is better alongside CWebb and other commentators.

Judging from this week, I'm not entirely sure that's something Morey wants to do.

I get McHale is fun to listen to, but his coaching leaves much to the imagination. Even his substitutions are always like 2 quarters too late.

From an outsider's perspective, McHale comes across as a passable coach. His offensive philosphy is unclear. His team's defensive approach is nearly non-existent. Surprising because he has the best defensive CENTER in the game.

He's proven capable of making the playoffs, but you guys have the talent to do more than that.

I definitely see a limit to how far he can take you guys.

I admire your team from afar, and kinda was hoping you guys would get Karl or Lionel Hollins this summer.

Here's hoping KM improves this year and gets you guys to the next level.

for a league where it is statisticaly proven coaching has minimum win impact i love me some superstar hofer on the bench and a face of franchise

Fact is that momentum in games is a real thing, while not tangible itself, you can tangibly see the effect it has when teams are on runs and how it can dramatically effect the outcome of games when you can generate any momentum.

When McHale took over from Wittman back in Minnesota, he started with an 8 game losing streak.

He was pretty good at tanking :-)

McHale is pretty much known as a point guard killer, he really doesn't know how to work with them.

He's not really a leader, which doesn't work well with a very young team like the one back in 2011-2012 with Dragic,Lowry,Lee, Scola, Morris, Parsons etc.

He really lacks the ability to make in-game adjustments as evident in games where Houston would lead by 10 or 15 points and then lose it after halftime or a timeout. This is largely why Portland was able to come back in nearly every game and win the series.
* Since 1985, Jeremy Lin became one of 15 players to have scored at least 20 points, seven assists and a steal for six games in a row, including 136 points in 5 starts beating out Iverson, Jordan and O'Neal :D

McHale is a better commentator than coach.

People keep saying NBA coaches have limited impact, at about +/- 3 games a season.

However, those 3 games can result in getting home court advantage, or even going from 9th seed to 7th seed.

HOU playoff games vs POR were so close. 2 possessions and 5 pts a game would have changed the final result.
NBA fan for over 30 years. Please don't get rustled, live in peace.

For the past 30 NBA years only 10 NBA coaches have won a championship.

Phil Jackson (11)
Gregg Popovich (5)
Pat Riley(4)
Rudy Tomjanovich (2)
Chuck Daly (2)
Eric Spoelstra (2)
KC Jones (1)
Larry Brown (1)
Rick Carlisle (1)
Doc Rivers (1)

Great. If you can find a way to get Phil Jackson and Gregg Popovich to the Rockets, I'll happily kick McHale out the door.
But do you know what they call a fool, who's full of himself and jumps into the path of death because it's cool?

Phil Jackson doesn't seem want to coach anymore, more like Pat Riley taking a backseat and watch his apprentice coach
Popovich is not leaving San Antonio
Riley is not coaching anymore
Daly is retired (too old now anyway)
Rudy T has health issue and can't coach
Jones, Brown are too old
Rivers and Carlisle aren't leaving now unless they keep missing playoff
so there aren't much option out there

JVG is happy in ESPN not sure he consider coach anymore
Karl is unclear with his health issue (there are reason why team stay away)
people mention Hornacek is better
but why his team is not in the playoff?
because he doesn't have stars?
we had Adelman we aren't in playoff too
because he got injured star?
people remember when he had Harden who just won 6th man of the year
he was consider all-star caliber player like Dragic (last season)
don't make him sound like a superstar when we got him
Asik was a backup
Lin is just Lin
then there is Parsons

it takes time for coach and players to develop the trust and relationship
it will be easier if Morey stop trading our players
no matter how good the coach is
if takes time to coach and learn and to win
Popovich failed few times in Spurs too with the big 3
remember his #1 Spurs got defeated by #8 Grizzlies?
just give McHale more time
and .... there just ain't much option out there

I usually don't lose it on the internet but WTF???

Chuck Daly died 5 years ago  :banghead:

Yes, after winning 61 regular season games that year POP's team was TOO TIRED for the playoffs, especially when 2 of those guys had national basketball duties as well.

You're trying to equate Houston's 1st round lost to a Spurs team that have already won multiple titles. It's not like the Spurs lost back to back 1st rounders

I don't get the JVG love. I really don't. JVG had as much success with the Yao-McGrady Rockets as McHale has had with these Rockets. It's not like JVG ran creative offenses( if anything, JVG was even worse with McGrady iso than McHale is with Harden iso), or developed young guys, and who can forget his obsession with bringing back every member of his old New York team like Charles Oakley? Yes, JVG is nice and personable and funny on NBA with ESPN. So was McHale.
But do you know what they call a fool, who's full of himself and jumps into the path of death because it's cool?

Return to Houston Rockets
