BPA or Need?

The Rockets strategy always seems to be Best Player Available when it comes to the draft.

Well...that or find and stash international players.

But at least with the first round picks it always comes down to BPA, and that's a strategy that doesn't sit well with everyone.

Basketball is not like MLB where BPA is pretty much a no-brainer. In Baseball you're not making decisions for the next season, or even the season after that when it comes to the draft. That sport allows for more long-term planning. In the NBA you're looking at what is essentially an immediate payoff. A guy going to the D-League for a season is seen by many NBA fans as a wasted pick (Clint Capela laughs at this opinion).

So, what do you prefer in an approach to a draft in the NBA? Do you want to try to fill a hole by drafting for need, or do you just take the best player available, regardless of position?

And since this is Houston, I'll include "trade" in the poll since this is, well...Houston.

Kind of hoping the bpa is a need to tell you the truth...grant or tyus or dekker

I'm thinking Moreys aiming for a trade but I don't think he will land his big fish

To tell you the truth I'm more interested in who we take 2nd round...wouldn't mind trying out upshaw even though we have Dwight and Clint (and Joey)...also wouldn't mind the kid from lsu since we won't have all 3 pfs back

I say take the guy with the highest potential and figure it out later because you're probably not getting an immediate contributor anyways

with the 18th you have to go with bpa since the gap between bpa and need is huge. not gonna be in the rotation anyway for at least another year.

but i wanna package the pick in a trade for a pg or for a good shooter off the bench. rockets already have nick and capella as their prospects, in win now mode you dont need a lot of those kinda players. by the end of the offseason rockets may end up with other teams prospects. with dwight at the end of his prime morey should be looking hard to trade that pick. 18th, jones, kostas, s&t bev or brewer should get us something good.

one of the main benefits of this is having smith off the bench. to me smith >>> jones.

that's why you draft BPA
showcase it in summer league
then trade while his stock is high

Jeremy Lamb is available now. Was he a BPA pick or need pick back in 2012? Is he a bust or is his career recoverable?

he is BPA pick
Lamb was considered in top 10 in mock draft
really hard to develop in OKC when you have Durant and Westbrook hogging the ball (then it was Jackson) and they didn't assign him to develop league
just like Perry Jones
both show flashes they can play just really bad situation in OKC where they need veteran instead of young players to play along Durant and Westbrook

This is a very good question. I don't know if there is one answer for it.

I guess it would be the person you see with the brighter future, even if it is not immediately realized.

my BPA definition is player with highest ceiling
if not available then the one most ready to play

We've been down this road. Taking Marcus Morris the BPA and another PF when we had Scola, PPat and JHill and we badly needed a SF and then Spurs get Kawhi with the very next pick.

Agreed. BPA is so highly subjective it really has no substance. Taking a player who can find some time on the team probably ends up having more value by getting on the floor that a prospect with perceived upside.

Kawhi falling was unbelievable to me. The dude was an obvious stud and had strong workouts. All he was missing was a jumpshot and he built that quickly.

So you agree Morey doesn't have a brain because we sure didn't pick him based on need.

3. 75-85% LMA/Love to Rockets
4. Big LAC trade? WTF? so we get PG from LAC?
5. try trade up for Turner or trade down for Dekker
6. if Rockets keep pick (10% chance), it will be shooter or Christmas

someone in the rockets went full (Please Use More Appropriate Word), cuz morris over kawhie even at the draft was a dumb move. hopefully they redeemed themselves, if it was mchale he just did that in the playoffs.
