I knew it. They always lied about their age. He was born at the same time as LeBron James.

He looked good today after a poor showing last time (which is to be expected) 13 points to lead the Chinese team on 5/9 shooting including 1/2 from three. Didn't grab alot of boards but he's still a rail thin 20 year old (hopefully) up against Cousons, Deandre, and Draymond so I'm not surprised lol

One of these things is not like the other. haha

edit: nvm I guess Neymar isn't a world champ either.

Well it is at least helpful to see him score some buckets on pretty damn elite players. I saw a good part of the game and the US team seem to either intentionally or unintentionally pulled him out of the paint on most of China's defensive possessions , which limited his ability to block shots, but it's also probably because in game 1 they played him more at center and Cousins just bulldozed him so they played him more as the PF this game. and the US PFs were rarely near the paint.

Defensively it's still where you worry most about him (but it's also where most of his upside is.) though I the assist he pulled off this game, they were truly impressive for a big to dribble across the 3 point line, and then hit a cutter right through 2 elite NBA wings. he showed off why he's probably a sure fired NBA player on offense anyway. a guy over 7 feet that can dribble pass shoot and finish with both hands??? there's no way he'd be a offensive zero .

The problem is that as a big he needs to at least hold his own on defense to be really playable. which at this point its still up in the air.

But as some other Rockets fan noted.... hey... an offensive talent that might not be able to play defense? seem to fit right in with our team concept!

The big man part of defense wasn't very good for him, not getting(or showing good motor on) rebounds, getting bullied inside, and not really protecting the rim, but alot of that is weight related and because he was guarding smaller players. I was actually impressed by his ability to stay infront of smaller players like Melo and KD. Obviously he wasn't shut down defensively but he looked as good as you could reasonably expect a 20 yo 7'2" guy to when defending those skilled wing players. If he can get rim protection down and put on weight I think he could be a good defensive center that can switch onto point guards in PnR late into the Clock which is very useful in today's NBA

Wonder if it's possible to bring him over during the season like we did Beasley since the Chinese season ends before the nba playoffs begin. We'd have to be under 15 players on the roster at that time of course

The rebounding part is one of the key worries I have written about with him. https://sharkfinhoops.com/2016/06/28/zhou-qis-fit-and-challenge-with-the-rockets-and-nba/

The problem is that for these games he wasn't near the rim very often anyway to get rebounds. if he was in the paint at all . the US's strategy in these games are clearly to exploit their superior athleticism to the max ( hence almost whole game full press defense. and also clearly crashing the glass on offense hard knowing that the chinese team is unlikely to make them pay on transitions.) .

All of these are why you really need to get him in the D-league / training camp fast, it's really hard to evaluate the true extent of his problems in settings so different from the NBA. (the way team USA played these games no NBA teams can reasonably replicate either, due to longer games and much shorter benches.)

Yeah he actually stayed with Melo / KD reasonably well, the shots they hit on him were mostly of the "well that's why they're super star" type stuff. I said he's almost certainly a 4 to start his career in the NBA. he's used in a strange way in the CBA where his team usually play a quasi zone to allow him to free lance (sort of like the old Wolf's defense when they had KG.) while accepting that they might give up more corner 3s that way. while that's certainly a viable strat against many teams as well in the NBA. it's certainly more risky too.

He got bulldozed by Cousins... well most bigs gets bulldozed by Boogie in the NBA as well, that's not actually the part that concerns me, I need to see him against more garden variety bigs in the NBA to judge, your not judged by if you can beat / defend super stars in the NBA , your really judge by if you can beat / defend the more average players.

Besides his passing he moves pretty well for a 7'2 giant.I think he has some ability that needs to be refined. We might be looking at a 2 to 4 year project.
