Ryno Revival

In 4 games since CP3's return, Ryno is averaging 16.8 ppg. He's also shooting 55% from 3 (16/29) and 56% from the field overall (22/39). It seems like Ryno drains every shot when CP3 is assisting him. Furthermore, he's been the most aggressive with respect to attacking the basket that I've seen from him since he joined the Rockets.

I think playing with CP3 is resulting in a mini Ryno revival, of sorts. I also don't think CP3 has ever played with a big who can reliably stretch the floor like Ryno. It's looked amazing so far. I also like the experiment of bringing Ryno off the bench and starting PJ (and would also be open to starting Luc instead of PJ).

Thoughts?

I agree with everything, save for this part:

Ryno's penetration game is the same as it's ever been.

I would still keep him in the starting lineup though, because his presence (gravity) is so essential to what they do. However I would probably look to pull him early so that he can come back and get more court time with CP3.

What I wonder with things like this...
Is that increase a random, temporary incident, or is it causal?
If causal, is it a result of...
- Being hit in places where balance and/or arm catch position is improved?
- Improved spacing, whether from better pass timing and location and speed?
- Scheduling, location, opponent strength, travel/rest?

i.e., how much effect does a better pass have on shooting percentages compared to a lesser pass, and how do you discern that effect from the sum of any other effects in play?

Honestly man, I know this might sound like a cop out, but I think it boils down to being in rhythm. I have no idea how to quantify that, but basketball is all about rhythm, and Ryno and CP seem to effortlessly play in synch with one another.

I also think that CP often penetrates to the opposite side of Harden given that he’s right handed, so Ryno is getting passes whipped to him from different angles than he’s used to seeing. He’s been getting a lot of elbow 3s too, whereas with Harden he’s typically getting a behind the back bounce pass at the top of the key or spotting up in the corner.

CP3's penetration is just disruptive against opponents' defensive schemes. This team is loaded with shooters and Ryno is definitely the greatest beneficiary considering his minutes. Seems like what Morey has envisioned with D' Antoni as the coach. Reminds me somewhat of the former Suns roster except this team has the luxury of 2 dominant facilitators as well as plenty of D&3 players.

Guys - I want to organize a candlelight vigil for the Spaceman's return to health.

Get better, big guy!

Ryno looked absolutely amazing last night. He even had two huge offensive-rebound putbacks. I was bummed when the Thunder traded for Melo, but as of now, it looks like we may have dodged a bullet...

Freaking Morey even had ME kinda wanting Melo on the team, and I've ALWAYS thought Melo was terrible.
Honestly, I think his pursuit of guys like Melo and Bosh are all smokescreen moves to keep the rest of the league guessing about what he ACTUALLY wants to do.

The more I’ve heard I don’t think that Morey was really that interested in Melo. Yeah, he made an offer but that was it.

I wanted absolutely nothing to do with Melo, but once we got CP3 I started convincing myself that it would work.

I've gotta say -- I love Morey, but I think he inadvertently dodged a major bullet when the Bosh trade fell through. We almost signed Bosh to a max deal, and if I remember correctly, we almost re-signed Parsons to a near-max deal with his Bird Rights. Imagine how AWFUL that would've been considering their injuries and subsequent lack of production.

Here'a a nice read on Ryno + CP3: http://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/21707827/nba-ryan-anderson-fire-chris-paul

"Paul has assisted on 25 of Anderson's 38 buckets during the winning streak, per NBA.com statistics. According to Second Spectrum data, Anderson has knocked down 21 of 27 3-point attempts off passes from Paul while the Rockets have rolled to eight straight double-digit victories."

What have you heard? I know he wouldn't budge in terms of including Ariza or EG in the deal. Seemed like he was only willing to go as far as Ryno and a pick.

I really think going after Melo was more to lure Lebron than anything. Melo would fit alright on this team though, certainly better than Ryno does against the Warriors

You guys are dead right about Ryno and CP3's chemistry though. And Ryno isn't nearly the defensive liability this year as he's been in years past

That was my understanding as well. If it were to happen, it would only have happened if the Knicks agreed to take Ryno. Either way, most fans were pretty neutral about the potential move.

Still perplexed by the amount we offered. Never thought Morey would make such a move. I think Ryno's still on the trade block for any team who wants him.

Nothing directly, but I pieced together a few things that I heard after some conversations. The one thing that seems apparent is that Houston never budged from their initial offer, and that includes what many may have thought of as minor additions. I kind of got the gist (and this is completely just how I read it) that the Knicks may have really annoyed the Houston front office early in the process, and despite it being the story of the summer it was never that active of a conversation. I don't think that Ariza or Gordon were ever slightly considered by Houston, but were asked for by NY. There was also some hope that Houston would help out on another deal, but I had no details on that.

Oh well, it all turned out for the best!

I think that’s an accurate read on the situation. Especially after everything Morey had to do to pull off the CP3 trade, I think the idea of getting Melo was more of a luxury for Morey than a necessity.

he is up and down, but the blazers were intent on not giving the rockets many 3s to begin with. that is when we started to get to the rim. i can see this strategy more as the season progresses with teams forcing the rockets to go inside.

Yup, unfortunately. But for what it's worth -- the Blazers were cooking us with our traditional bigs on the floor as they were the only players in the red in terms of plus-minus rating for the game (Capela was -2, Nene was -15, and Ryno was -7). Ryno isn't a traditional big, but he's big/slow enough to count as a big for the purposes of this discussion. Not entirely sure what to make of it, but yea, we struggled until we went with the Tuckwagon lineup.
