How will Morey use the MLE?

With Carmelo Anthony reportedly signing a Veteran's Minimum deal that means that Houston keeps their full MLE.
How will Morey use this? I've seen comments that we could see bigger contracts for Hartenstein & Melton, or that he may wait all the way until the trade deadline.
Can the MLE be used to absorb salary in a trade? I'm so out of the loop on Salary Capology.

Swaggy P? Not advocating for or against him but the Rockets reportedly had interest though perhaps Melo cancelled that out.

No, you cannot use the MLE as a trade exception. They'll probably use it to give three year deals to Hartenstien and Melton, at $838,464 each, leaving $3.66M of the $5.5M available.
As for that remainder I guess they'll keep it hoping for buyouts unless a good deal comes up

Hartenstein signed today for 3 years, so that means they did indeed use part of the mid level, only $4.5M left, with Melton likely to also get 3 years

I'm so damn disappointed that Morey let Luc walk when he could be had for the MLE. Luc better have permanent shoulder damage for Morey not to prioritize him after losing the LeBron fantasy and Trevor Ariza. That kind of f-up would make me want to hate my GM.
There's no wing left on the market worth the MLE, so we might end up saving it for when players start to get bought out during the season. The likelihood a team buys out an effective two-way wing player is very low due to their trade value. I don't know if that money will be spent or not, but dammit fans have been royally screwed of our best chance at defeating Golden State simply by not running everything back. Tillman said he'd open his wallet for a true championship team and we had one last year.

Agreed. Also the chance that the reason the Mle wasn't offered is ownership not wanting to pay, not Morey

Most likely, he’s going to lay it out in 5 parallel lines, chop it into a fine powder, and snort the sh*t out of it, like any good number cruncher would do.
Come on man, hollywood’s been telling us how this stuff works behind the scenes since Scarface.
