Why haven't the Rockets signed Melo yet?

Second thoughts after the bench comments? Might be wanting to see if they can get Rodney Hood or trade Anderson before they resort to signing Melo.

I believe that he is currently in Africa on vacation.

If it does happen (not a sure thing), then it likely won't be until after he is back here.

Yes, the last info I saw had Carmelo and family in Soweto.
Also, I believe there was a report that Daryl Morey was in Vancouver.

OP, it's interesting that you wrote "before they resort to signing Melo" since I don't think that represents the Rockets' thinking at all.
Despite popular narrative, most of the hand-wringing and consternation has come from talking heads and those outside of the situation. I don't think any of the parties directly involved view it in that light.

If you can trade Ryno for Marvin Williams and MKG or a similar package, I don't know if you want or need to bring Melo in. He's an average defender and an okay shooter, but I wouldn't want to see him running isolation plays which I fear would happen.

because he is in South Africa for NBA Africa game
that's over over the weekend
don't know when he will return

someone claimed a friend of his met Tilman in a bar and Tilman told him that Melo want guaranteed min and start which is also holding up the signing

you believe what you want
Rockets met with Melo before the trade
if they can't agreed on something there is noway Melo would waive his no trade clause

While a trade like that would potentially be very good for the Rockets, I don't think it would impact their desire to add Carmelo for a number of reason.

First of all, in today's NBA you can never have too many weapons. Although perhaps not quite as formidable as he once was, Melo is still a legit threat.

Secondly, he would reportedly be coming in on a one year, vet minimum deal. That makes adding Carmelo as risk-free as it gets for that level of talent.

Furthermore, the guys on the team want Melo there, most notably Chris Paul and James Harden. I don't know if a trade for Williams and Kidd-Gilchrist changes that.

As I said, contrary to what some doomsayers would have you believe, the Rockets' interest in Melo is not an act of desperation but rather an opportunity to improve.

Marc Stein seems pretty convinced that this is a "when" not an "if" situation.

And BallerTalk is correct - the Rockets are not approaching this like some sort of desperation move. The overall take on the Houston Rockets by the national media is pretty off-base.

So last year he counted for around $24 million against the cap for the Thunder, and this year he will count for about $1.5 million against the cap for the Rockets.

It wasn't my first hope for the team. but I'm not seeing the risk here. I'm going to trust that Morey, MDA, CP3 & Harden know more than the rest of us when it comes to a move like this.

You know that scene in Super Troopers where Capt. O'Hagan says he'll pistol whip the next guy who says shenanigans?

I kinda feel the same way about the folks who predictably spew out the "Houston we have a problem" rubbish.
