Congrats to Yao, but it will be tough to break Hakeem's record.

Someone would have to average a little over 3 blocks per game for 15 years - playing all 82 games - to break Hakeems record. I don't see Dwight ever getting his career average up that high, it's only 1.7 right now.

Even Deke is 500 blocks behind Hakeem.

Dwight Howard isn't a tremendous shotblocker. Even this season at his career best in 38 mpg, he's only averaging 2.4 blocks per game.

If anyone will break Hakeem's record it will be Josh Smith. He started playing very young and is pretty healthy. Hakeem's record would be tough to break, but unlike Stockton's assist record it is not untouchable.

Wasn't too long ago when people thought AK47 could be a contender for the record. I don't think these shot blocking tweeners who rely a lot on jumping ability can keep up the pace over their career since often they're not guarding the paint like centers do.

Smith has 713 blocks in 274 games so far (2.6 bpg)
Olajuwon had 3,830 blocks in 1,238 games played (3.09 bpg)

Smith needs 3118 to break the record.
If Smith plays 964 more games to equal Dream in games played he would need to average 3.23 blocks per game. to break the record.

Of course he might play more than 964 future games (11 more seasons) since he is only 22 but if he played 1200 more games he would still need to average 2.6 bpg to break the record.

I doubt Josh Smith is long enough to keep blocking them once he loses his athleticism.

Anyone with any real shot is going to have 4+ bpg for at least one season, and quite a few over 3 without many games missed.

3.40 - 68, 3.39 - 75, 3.44 - 82, 4.59 - 82, 3.95 - 56, 4.34 - 70, 4.17 - 82, 3.71 - 80, 3.36 - 72

That's a lot of blocks (2267) in just his GREAT (9) years, and doesn't even take into account the other 9 seasons in which he DIDN'T average over 3 bpg.

Hell, most players would have problems just matching his FIVE BEST YEARS - 282, 376, 304, 342, 297 (1601)

One thing that kinda sucks is that Hakeem is probably going to lose out 7th place in steals to either Jason Kidd or Allen Iverson. I like having a center in the top 7, too. Plus, he's right behind Clyde.

Yeah Hakeem's record doesn't seem like it'd to be touched by anybody currently in the league.

Yeah, 2.4 isn't bad by any stretch. Yao isn't really a shot blocker either, he's not quick enough to get to the proper position to block shots. It's always harped on, but he really does alter a lot more shots than he blocks, it's just that a lot of guys in league are good enough to make it after being forced to alter it. He obviously still provides a pretty good co-anchor (with Battier) for our defense though.
