Can Yao win MVP this year?

It's amazing what we've been able to accomplish when we actually surround him with decent players, I think Yao is unquestionably our mvp, but does anyone think he has a shot at MVP for the season? What needs to happen?

Just some things to consider, Duncan won mvps back back to back 01-02 and 02-03, check out his stats. While Yao's aren't as good as Duncan's, he's not exactly that far off either. Duncan had the edge over everyone else in mvp voting those years because of his team record. I think If Rockets can finish top 3, Yao may have a shot at getting MVP.

If we ended up with the best record in the West, he might have a chance.... Otherwise no.
This year, i think either KG or KB has it locked up.

Yao might get his first finish in the Top 10 (or even Top 5) assuming we keep up the wins, but no way he wins it IMO. We'd likely have to finish with the best record in the West and he'd have to least put up 25/11 the rest of the season. He hasn't outplayed a guy like Paul who IMO is the MVP.

We will have to finish the season without another loss. And next time the Cavs play the Celtics, LeBron and KG have to collide and get injured.

Remember when Kidd first went to the Nets? He reversed their record from 30-52 to 52-30 but still got beat out by Duncan for mvp, many people felt that Kidd should have won it.

Even if the Rockets do win out, Tracy would take enough votes away from Yao to make him lose a couple spots.

I think it's become apparent that this is Yao's team now, in the same way that KG took over for Boston admist Ray and Pierce. I can't imagine many coaches would give the mvp nod to Tmac when opposing coaches worry night in and night out about Yao.
It's just become so much more obvious this season. Tmac is relied less on for his scoring because we now have guys capable of taking advantage of all those doubleteams thrown at Yao.

For him to win MVP Yao has to average 25/12/3/3 for the rest of the year and have the team finish in the top few teams in the league.
Given how inconsistent and mediocre he has been this season, it is not going to happen.

nope. Yao is great but there are tons of players who deserve MVP more.

You really think he needs those type of numbers to make a case? If KG is a mvp candidate right now with the stats hes putting up, then if the Rockets end up with one of the best records, I think he may have a shot with the stats hes putting up now.
Remembers, MVPs traditionally favor big men.

I doubt it. Even tho he's really dominating, I still think this is Tracy's team. Tracy is the generator of the offense.

If we somehow go on a tear (or I guess continue our tear) throughout the season and end up with the #1 seed I think he has a chance. I don't believe his numbers have to necessarily increase at all. MVPs traditionally have come from top seeded teams, which is why KG is probably a shoe-in along with Paul coming in 2nd. It is also more team-impact driven than stats alone.

That's the other argument against him winning MVP; many people feel he is not the most valuable player on his own team.
Personally I feel that both Yao and McGrady have failed to take ownership of this team this year through inconsistent and mediocre play. IMO it is "Yao's team" by default right now because McGrady has been very poor lately but the debate is not settled at all.

Yao still doesn't deserve it. Yao is indeed special given his stature but ability to produce despite the burden of it. But he's shown us that he is mobile enough and skilled enough to hold up to higher standard than Bradley, Muresan, Bol, and etc. But he still has to progress with the athelticism that would put him over the top. There are lob, rebound, and shotblock opportunities that still fly by his head more often than not. He's so close to the rim most times but still is unable to put in down consistently.
Yao increased his own standard of excellence and needs to finish at the rim with putbacks, extra rebounds, and shot blocks given his size and relatively ease of adjustment he has to make (Ball literally right by his head or an arms reach away). If he only did this he would be supreme.

No. He won't be able to beat CP3/LBJ/KG this year

Yao can win Finals MVP - the only award that really matters!
