To be involved in the trade, Memphis had to give up something, be it a player, cash, pick, or rights to a player. You always have to give up something, even if it's a useless something.
They gave up the rights to Lishouk - a scrub who will never make the NBA - just as their token "something".
However, NBA teams like to hold on to rights to such type of scrubs in the unlikely scenairo that they
a) become good
b) are ever wanted by another team for some reason
c) can use them as "somethings" in deals, just as Lishouk was here. (Another example - Peja's sign and trade from Indiana to New Orleans saw New Orleans give the Pacers the draft rights to a scrub drafted in the 90's, Andy Betts. To make the deal work, the Hornets had to give up something.)
But because they gave up Lishouk, Memphis no longer had rights to any scrubs in this way. So they asked Houston for one back. And they probably requested Badiane because even though he'll almost certainly never make the league, he has more chance than Venson Hamilton and Kyle Hill, so there's a greater chance of Memphis ever getting some use of those rights.
So there you go. Fun stuff if you have no life.
