Yao Ming and the Olympics

Yao said missing the olympic games in Bei Jing would be the biggest disappointment in his life. The olympic games are his #1 priority, not the playoffs and not even the NBA finals. We all know how patriotic and commited Yao is to chinese basketball. The olympic happens every 4 years but Bei Jing will only get one shot at it. THere's a good chance he might rush back to play in Bei Jing before he's completely healed.

I'm beginning to think that Yao opted for surgery now in order to play in the olympics in China. If that's the case, then I can't begin to express how disrespectful that is. He gets paid to play the game for the Houston Rockets, and he has an obligation to the franchise. I don't want to believe it, but it does seem a bit fishy that he's played through this injury since it happened vs Milwaukee.

I dont think this is a conspiracy by any means. I dont believe it. If yao can play, he'll be the first one out there on the basketball court. His injury is 100% legit, there's no reason to doubt it. What i'm afraid of is that he'll play in the olympics despite his injury ala Garbajosa. I think Yao really wants to represent his Country. I mean, can you blame the guy? To Yao, olympic in his home country is a once in a life time opportunity. I wouldn't mind seeing him play in August but only if he is competely healthy. After this olympic game, i would like to see Yao retire from Chinese basketball obligation. No more basketball for Yao in the summer after this year. THe man simply can't play year round non-stop ball and hope to stay fresh.

He has his priorities straight. I commend Yao for not being a traitor like Wang Zhizhi.

The MRI doesn't lie, I don't think Yao would stop playing if the Doctor had allowed him to play.
He was pretty visibly upset at the news, there is no way he'll quit during the season after playing so hard to get there.

Olympics is presenting his country (that's huge honor)
especially this year is in Beijing
probably wont be in China for another 30 years

IIRC, he said this is the last year he is gonna play for CNT, he's been doing his duty for 10 straight years, so if he can't play this summer that means CNT has absolutely no chance to get a metal.

So are you saying there's a conspiracy that the Yao and the Rockets knew about the stress fracture since Milwaukee? What exactly would that have accomplished? As for Yao deciding on surgery or not, it's already been reccomended to him by the Rocket's staff that he take the surgery ASAP, regardless of the Olympics, so it's not like he's hanging us out to dry while he recovers for the Olympics.
Edit: Whether or not he decides to go for surgery or not, it doesn't matter to us, he's still going to be unable to play for the same recovery time that it will take, which was predicted to be 4 - 6 months.

I don't know man. It's just so weird to hear this news because two nights ago I watched him play normally. Yeah it seemed like he was hurting a bit, but it certainly did not seem like he was suffering from that something that was going to end his season. Hearing the news of his injury is just so sudden that it hasn't all sunk in yet.

CBA had press conferene already. Yao will have surgery ASAP.

Even with Yao,they still can't win a medal in August.now they can't blame because this injury.But I do think Yao will suit up in Olympics game.

I have to agree with King Roosk, that it was strange to hear he played through this for a while wit hlittle ill effects, and is now out for half a year.
If I had to guess, I'd say the decision was taken out of his hands.

Probably started as a stress reaction, which turn into stress fractures.
Chris Paul played with a stress reaction in his foot for the remainder of last year, and had surgery in the off-season to correct the problem before the fracture occurred. Once the fracture occurs, all bets are off. Surgery is a must.

it's China (his home country) hosting the Olympics this year
so it is once in a lifetime
btw Yao didn't play for the Chinese national team 2 summers ago
remembered the foot injured?
