Mutombo has not ruled out returning in 2008-09

Post#1 » by dream34 » Thu Feb 28, 2008 12:15 am

HOUSTON -- Houston Rockets center Dikembe Mutombo told reporters after practice Wednesday that General Manager Daryl Morey approached him about returning to the Rockets next season. Mutombo signed a one-year contract prior to the 2007-2008 season with plans to retire after. The 41-year former NBA Defensive Player of the Year said it's something he will take up with his family and didn't rule it out.

"The (Rockets) management approached me," Mutombo said. "I have to think about it."

"I have to talk to the wife and kids and see how everybody feels about it and then I have to talk to Coach (former Georgetown coach John) Thompson."

In his first start of the season Tuesday night against Washington Mutombo played 23 minutes getting six rebounds, blocking four shots, and scoring four points in a 94-69 Rockets victory.

"I did ask him to consider playing next year," Morey said in an interview with FOX 26 Sports. "Any team with Dikembe Mutombo is a better team."

"You could not ask for a better backup for Yao Ming. The Rockets and the City of Houston are extremely lucky to have him as a player and a citizen."

How crazy is that?

The man loves the game, and he desperately wants to win.

means a lot to the team.

Dang, love to have him back, but if he returns based on winning a championship we shouldn't sign him, I feel bad for the guy, we should have traded him the the Spurs or Celtics or something before the deadline.

Jeez, every season we assume he has nothing left in the tank, up until he fills in for Yao and looks damn good, and suddenly, another productive year from this geezer sounds not so far-fetched after all. And the thing is, he still IS better than most of the backup, as well many several starting, centers in the league.
