NBA's max roster is 15 players. Teams prefer to carry 14 so they have a spot for injury replacement or future flexability to pick up a waived player or for multi-player in-season trade.
The Rockets have following under contract:
C....Yao,Woods(not guaranteed)
PF...Scola,Hayes,Novak(team option)
SF...Battier,Harris(not guaranteed)
SG...McGrady,Head
PG...Alston,Jackson,Brooks,Francis(can opt out-not likely)
Team Free Agents... Motumbo(C),Landry(PF)
Draft Picks...#25,#49
9 gauranteed contracts,3 Rockets have options on,2 FAs,2 Draft picks.
One of the PG's has got to go as team is desperately thin in the wings(SF/SG). Yao has had significant injury problems the past 3 yrs so the team needs a reliable back-up C. Even if Motumbo comes back,he can't be counted on for 30+ minutes a game.
Most teams carry 3 PGs,5-6 wings and 5-6 bigs.
