OT- NBA banned in China

breaking news guys, NBA is banned in China. since two weeks ago or so the big networks including CCTV, SITV etc. stopped broadcasting NBA games, allegedly because David Stern and some players expressed criticism over the Chinse Government's involvement in the Darfur issue.

ok, first, i dont know what the hell is going on with the american celebrities recenly. first one CNN idiot said on TV that "all chinese products are garbage", and then Sharon Stone referred to the magnitute-8 earthquake in Sichuan China "a karma", and now this. you know what my opinion is on there things? with due respect to you good readers, IT REALLY TAKES A (Please Use More Appropriate Word) TO SAY SOMETHING LIKE THAT. I have my favorite american stars, but certainly not these RETARDS, retards!

what David Stern should be able to understand is that he is a "commissioner", what he says will most certainly have effect on the game. now this guys openly expressed his views against the chinese government's stance on Darfur issue, and he is happy to see a lot of players get involved. NOW WHAT DOES THAT MEAN? Sharon stone and co. had proved that being a star does NOT mean nothing of high intelligence, and a star shall be very discreet when she/he says anything concerning public topics, esp. political ones. as pro athlets, NBA stars, everyday mostly concerned with more physically-oriented work, should comform to the rule more strictly. what david stern is going is actually encouraging a bunch of powerful guys with limitted political knowledge make public comment based on second-hand hearsays on a complicated issue, and he thinks that's cool?!!!

and it makes sense when david stern puts a political tint on the games, the chinese TVs react in a more political way. what do you expect? it's just fair. and you know chinese TVs are political all along.

so shut the hell up stern, you stupid (Please Use More Appropriate Word), stop misguiding the players, let them play the game, and let the fans enjoy the game instead of your stupid immature comments on something you dont have any clue about.

Very interesting. First thought was - this can't really be true. Second thought was - Yao Ming's status just went from 'untradeable' to 'could be had for the right price'.

Well, if it is true then it shows the Chinese govts immaturity more than anything else. No offense Hackle, but people in the States have freedom of speech. People can say what they like whether you agree with it or not. For a govt to react to criticism from non-political figures this way merely shows a rather large inferiority complex imo. Taking heat comes with the territory of being a world power.

But, having said that. I doubt this can be true. It would just be too bizarre. I give the Chinese govt. a bit more credit than that. Surely they have more to concern themselves with right now than chasing up random comments in the media.

here, lebron knows better:

and david stern is being silly:
http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_k ... _n19208993

while wikipedia is just being objective:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Darfur

It's amazing how lazy people would get, making blindfold comments on things they dont know nothing about.

Great post.

However, if true, I can imagine why the Chinese government reacted= in such manner. Like you said, freedom of speech is not accepted in such communist countries.

great to hear how you guys look at it!

actually i agree with you about the immaturity... since CCTV IS the a station controlled by the government and tries a lot of brainwashing stuff. thus it is very touchy when it comes to political issues.

on the other hand david stern, being the speical commissioner, should have been more discreet about his comment in public. CCTV didnt ban Hollywood for Spielber's quiting olympics and sharon stone's malicious comments, for they dont represent anybody. David Stern OBVIOUSLY represented NBA and all the players. With the star powers of all players and all. He knows it, we know it, and he knows we know it.

i guess that's why CCTV is being so pissed after all. they couldnt have done this if it were just a player, or any player, i guess. it's not yet that touchy.

about free speech... i want you to know that you can say anything in china today, private or public. we actually have pretty radical newpapers and tv programs. however, networks like CCTV imposes heavy censorship to keep the tone right. it's not like if you say something against the part you get taken away and killed... but it's a far cry from play idiotic political comments on TV, esp. concerning other countries issues, which inevitably will be misinterpreted as misrepresentation.

well it's being a good discussion and i enjoy it very much.

eh. Free speech is not something that is enjoyed in every part of the world. In fact, it is a negative liberty according to political scientists since it brings nothing but trouble as seen from what Stern has done. If a scrub was to have said those stuff, it probably would not carry much weight. But it was Stern!

Using the word, "immature", on the Chinese government is inappropriate. In fact don't use use ideas and frameworks from where you are on another place since you have absolutely no or little idea what their culture is. Yet still, I still feel that the Chinese government reaction is wrong as there could be better ways to resolve the issue. Hence, I would simply call the Chinese government reaction as "wrong" but not "childish " or "immature" Their reaction is not about free speech. It is a question of sovereign pride and politics. The Chinese government is not going let a bunch of people criticizing them.

Yet, if you look from another angle, it is move to show how much economic clout the Chinese has amassed over the years. Sponsors, advertisers and others would be alarmed as their revenues would be hurt. Nevertheless, it could backfire as the China, now an economic power, would be forced by the sponsors and others to lift the ban.

By the way, CCTV is not all about brainwashing. If you understand Chinese, there are programs where they talk about Government policies moderately.

This makes me nervous with YAO. What happens if China says that YAO you can't play there. Would the NBA give us somthing to replace our starting Center? This along with YAo getting Bashed for not sending more money to the quake victims really concerns me as it should all rocket fans.

The Rockets are still paying Yao 13 million a year. He's on a contract.

I don't think that means anything to the Chinese government.

no worries man, no matter what happens between CCTV and NBA, yao is staying as long as he wants to stay.

i would have laughed out loud, for that's some bad miscomprehension, that you think the government LITTERALLY controls everything, and i guess that's very representative of you guys from the U.S. or the western world. i dont mean anybody is wrong, it's an understanding thing.

please understand that yao is an free individual as much as any NBA player, when it comes to career decision, though he carries certain responsibility to his country, and there is possibly some background deal between him and the chinese basketball authority, due to the fact that he is trained and made by them. he may be affected but just like anybody else.
