Grade Morey's performance last year in the off-season

Post#1 » by McGrady2Head » Mon Jun 23, 2008 1:41 am

The off-season officially begins Thursday night with the draft. Lets grade Moreys offseason last year, so we can see what to expect this year.

Aaron Brooks: It was to say the least a big reach to snag Aaron Brooks at #26. He was projected to go around #36. I believe it backfired on us. He is not a good player, and he never will be. He is too small. Small guards like that never really end up being that great.
Grade: F+

Carl Landry: He's amazing, theres nothing else to say about it. All Rookie teamer with the #31 pick.
Grade: A

Luis Scola trade: Excellent move, we have found out PF for years to come, and he is 1 of four players on this team who is untradeable (Scola, Landry, T-Mac, Yao).
Grade: A+

Mike James: Really backfired, but it got rid of juwan howards contract.
Grade: D

Bonzi: Great signing, i still dont know why we traded him.
Grade: B

Steve Francis: Im giving this move a C. Judging what we have gotten so far, its an F. But i cant blame morey on this, francis came into camp fat because he thought the job would be handed to him. Now he knows he must work for a spot in the rotation. Best case scenario hes our 4th scorer after yao, t-mac, the guy we get back when we trade battier, then francis. worst case we just bench him. we will still be good without himm

Yeah Allen Iverson sucks too......he is the same size as Brooks.
I am by no means saying Brooks will ever be another Iverson but I do think it is too soon to say that he will never amount to anything in the NBA. I would give the Brooks draft pick a D at the moment.

I would also give the Francis pick up an F. He is finished as a solid player and I think they should trade him as an expiring if at all possible.

You're too harsh on Brooks. I think he has potential to be a good player in the NBA. He just needs time to adjust. With his superior quickness and shooting ability, he'll able to find a nice niche in the NBA. He hasn't shown much in his first year but i feel he has good qualities.

OFF-SEASON
Draft: Aaron Brooks
Morey drafted Brooks for the long run. He hasn't received enough playing time to justify his abilities on the court. However, he's had several games where he showed that he had some potential.

Grade: B-
Projected Grade: B-

Draft: Carl Landry
Landry was an important member during our 22-game winning streak, but we've also realized that he will have injury problems in the future. I'd give an A for what he did last year, but I am not sure what he's going to be like in the future.

Grade: A
Projected Grade: B

Sign: Steve Francis
Low risk, high reward; but as it turned out, Francis was nothing but garbage. What a waste of 3 million dollars.

Grade: C-

Trade: Luis Scola
Thank God, we got rid of the Greek McGrady. Dude was a drama queen and a useless piece of ****.

Grade: A

Trade: Mike James
Nothing significant. We actually took a worse contract. Juwan's was expiring, Mike James had 2 years left.

Grade: F

MID-SEASON
Trade: Bobby Jackson
Dumped Bonzi and Chucker James, who were both useless to this organization. Jackson didn't impress me, but overall, it was a good move. We got a larger expiring contract in return.

Grade: B-

Trade: Gerald Green
Confusing trade. We got rid of Snyder and traded for a young player with some potential. Then we waived him. We ended up wasting a 2nd round pick.

Aaron Brooks B

At the time of the draft last season I didnt like the pick simply because I wanted Big Baby or Josh McRoberts, but Brooks has proven to me other wise. Im limited PT (11 minutes) he averaged 5 points a game, and at that rate in 22 minutes he would have averaged 10 points a game. He certainly proved he deserve a spot on our roster. He just needs to quit passing up shots.

Carl Landry A

Landry was a diamond in the rough pickup for us in the draft. Thank you Seattle for trading him to us. If only he played earlier in the season and not miss any games, how good would he had been. He still averaged 8 points and 5 rebounds in 16 minutes off the bench, and was a good player for us in the playoffs (ask Boozer). I expect more thing for Carl next season.

Luis Scola A

Thank you Spurs for trading him to us for basically nothing. At first I was mad at Adelman for not benching Hayes and starting Scola. But ever since he made his first start for us, our season took off. He averaged 10 points for us, playing next to Yao and elevated his scoring in the postseason with 14 a game. What a steal for us.

Mike James D

At the first part of the season Mike James plated well, but ever since he lost favor to less PT he tailed off, and thats why he was traded.

Bonzi Wells B

Good signing by us, but Carroll Dawson made the move, not Morey. Too bad we traded him.

Steve Francis C

The franchise came to camp out of shape, next year I see a better Francis.

You suppose it was possible we were either doing Snyder's agent a favor for future considerations, had an incorrect impression of GG, or he did something very stupid while he was here and we nicely just waived him and took the very very mild PR hit rather than hurt his career in return?

First, did Morey properly identify Rocket needs? The Team had no depth at PG,PF position needed upgrading amd a solid back-up for T-Mac would have been nice. Morey brought in 3(THREE!!!) PGs and 2 PFs.He tried to draft the best Euro SG but was beat to the pick. Prob believed Adelman cought get something out of Bonzi.
Solid A for evaluating needs,B for evaluating own talent. A for having a plan B for when Rudy didn't happen.
Second, how did his players perform? Solid B+ for the PF's(still couldn't get it done against Jazz,so no A). PG is a D+. James and Francis gave almost nothing to point he had to make Feb trade to get a back-up PG. Brooks giving some quality minutes 2 yrs ahead of schedule salvages the D.
Third, how was he at evaluating talent? Scola-a,Landry-B-(because of the bad contract he signed w/Landry,obviously Morey wasn't sure on Landry),Brooks-B+(a number of other teams wanted him,and Morey's stated expectation was it would be 2 yrs before Brooks was ready),James-D,Francis-F(was brought in to be starting PG,couldn't even beat out James for back-up. Biggest mistake of Morey era to date.) Overall C.
Fourth how did he draft? Brooks-B,Landry-A. Overall A-
Finally, how did he handle strategic direction of team? Poorly handled JVG situation, recovered extremely well w/Adelman. Overall A-.
Final Grade...B. Identified needs, tried to fill them, drafted well,22 Game Win Streak, selected new coach who offers hope, but his team still fell short in First Rd.

Overall, I'd give him a B.

The Good
Getting Landry and Scola for essentially nothing was huge, really solidifed our PF position and something to look forward to going into the future. Brooks showed enough flashes for a late first rounder for him to be considered at least a decent pick (especially in that draft which wasn't particularly the strongest.

I also liked the Bonzi signing.

The Bad
Mike James-really is there anything more that needs to be said?

The Undecided
I still have some hope for Francis, he was signed to a relatively cheap contract and did show some of his old self when he came off the bench. We'd be in trouble if we expected anything more than that from him.

The Bonzi trade is yet to be decided, we got rid of Mike James's contract which was good, but it's still a wait and see approach with what we can acquire with Jackson's expiring.

The Jackson,Greene trades were during season, not part of last summer.
The biggest negative I have w/Morey is the Francis signing. Whatever the merits might have been, once it was clear Alston was going to remain the starting PG,Francis should have been moved. His presence on the roster took up a spot that should have gone to a SG/SF reserve.
