We knew it was going to happen. I became a Landry fan during the streak.

I hope he sticks around. Call me crazy, but I think he has a higher ceiling than Scola.

EDIT: Here's the Chronicle article on the subject: http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports/5862829.html

Jove9...you so crazy.
Seriously,I agree Landry does seem to have a higher ceiling than Scola. Problem I see is Landry's foundation isn't solid and he won't come close to his ceiling, whereas Scola will keep chugging along, being a nice solid pro.
If Landry signs I have this horrifying vision of Hayes for JJ Reddick. Arrgh!

Landry is 24, 3 years younger than Scola. They are about the same height and weight.

Landry averaged about 2 pts and 2 rbds less than Scola in about 8 minutes less. I know it's not fair to compare stats between these two guys because their games are different, but think about how much more Landry can develop in his time in the NBA versus Scola. In 3 years Scola will be 30. In 3 years, Landry will be entering his prime.

Is that really so far-fetched?

I can't tell if some of you are joking or not.

Scola is learning what the refs will and will not allow. Plus Scola was MVP of the Americas tourny a few years back and teams know about him and are able to play better defense.

Landry is a very good player, but the more success he gets the more other teams will have a pregame meeting on him. Basically all his rebounds and points come off the offensive board. Teams will adjust quicker now that his name will be on their radar and they will do a better job of keeping him off the boards.

Things will adjust during the 2008-09 season and we will get a better look on where they are headed.

Here's the big question... Will Houston match a full MLE deal for Landry when another team offers it to him?

I'm pretty sure someone will. Good, young bigmen are hard to come by.

Well he's 6'7 265, which is pretty big. And yes I think most of us would agree his ceiling is higher then Scola, the guy has major potential to break out. IMHO I'd rather start him over Scola, just because of that, his PER is 23pts, 14reb, on 66% shooting lol, doesn't mean he will average that but he can do something close to that if he played starting mins. Because last season he only played 16mins averaging just 8 and 5 on 61%, not bad at all. Again though, health issues are there for him to. And bstein yes Rockets will match a full MLE, but thats the highest that can be offered to him.

For a full MLE offer we don't know , maybe and maybe not.
I wouldn't be surprised if we wouldn't because that would be a bad contract.
He didn't prove he is worth anything more than what Scola our starting pf is getting , and thats about 3 million per year.

As indicated by hoopshype.com, we did have his team option for this year.
That site is never wrong in regards to players salaries.

then they are dead wrong this time
Landry only signed one year and only one year
no team option or player option on the 2nd year
not a typical 2nd rounder contract

if his 2nd year is a team option
there's no reason to re-sign him

Then what does this article say?
http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/spo ... 63210.html

The Rockets extended a qualifying offer to restricted free-agent forward Carl Landry on Sunday.

In his first season out of Purdue, the 6-9 Landry averaged 8.1 points and 4.9 rebounds in 42 games.

According to the NBA's collective bargaining agreement, the qualifying offer establishes the Rockets' right of first refusal. Restricted free agents may sign an offer with any team, but the Rockets have the ability to match any offer to Landry.

The one-year contract Landry signed last October called for a team option of $711,000 for next season. The Rockets will have only the mid-level exception (expected to be roughly $6 million) to offer to free agents while staying under the luxury tax.

Thats good that we gave him on offer. Hopefully no team overpays for him so we have to match it. He is a huge part of our future.

that's the qualify offer which every team can use after their free agent's rookie contract ended
example:
1. we offered Landry the qualify offer, making him restricted free agent
2. Clips didn't give Livingston the qualify offer, making him unrestricted free agent
see this wiretap for more info
http://basketball.realgm.com/src_wireta ... _williams/
In accordance with the league’s collective bargaining agreement, in order for a team to retain its right of first refusal with respect to a restricted free agent, the team must tender the player a qualifying offer prior to June 30. A restricted free agent may sign an offer sheet with any team, but is subject to a right of first refusal with the team for which the player last played.

Rockets may pass on Landry???

Either Morey is ready to pass on Landry because we drafted Joey Dorsey or they're trying to lower his value so he won't get a outrageous deal they would have to match in free agency.

“We’re only making an offer if he gets a more detailed examination than imaging,” Rockets general manager Daryl Morey said.
http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/hea ... 64870.html

Signing Landry, the Rockets other primary free agent target might be more complicated than another chase of Barry, or even last summer’s sticky and eventually contentious negotiations when Landry was an unsigned second-round pick.

The Rockets have asked for Landry to undergo more in-depth testing of his right knee, which was injured during the season, before they would extend an offer. Landry, 24, missed seven games with what was termed a sore right knee. He averaged 8.1 points and 4.9 rebounds in 42 games, making 61.6 percent of his shots.

The Rockets signed Landry just before the start of training camp after a long, often tense negotiation over the amount of money that would be guaranteed in his rookie contract. The Rockets had planned to sign him to a three-year deal using a portion of their mid-level exception, but instead spent they remainder of their exception money to sign Steve Francis.

Landry is a restricted free agent, giving the Rockets the option to match any offer he receives, as long as the contract would work with the salary cap rules. That would limit them to their mid-level exception money. They hope to use the lower level exception, worth roughly $1.9 million, for Barry.

He's just downplaying Landry's value just so he'll get fewer offers from other teams.
