Morey, waiting for the right time to go "all in"

"That's our main focus: Get one more significant player on the roster somehow," Morey said. "That's the goal. That's my job, so hopefully we will get it done."
Because other teams have hopes to stoke and tickets to sell, too. The Rockets aren't going to add a major piece to a championship puzzle by getting a contender to break up its core. Morey figures he'll have to bide his time until one of the pretenders gets a slap in the face from reality.
"Teams can pretty unrealistically think they've got a shot ... go through the first month or two of the season," Morey said. "Then it becomes apparent that they don't have a shot.""We're in a good situation," Morey said. "We can go all-in a little bit with this core, which we think is a good core. And if for whatever reason it doesn't work, we've got a lot of flexibility."http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports/5876244.htmlThe Houston Rockets are in a great situation right now. The fact that we need a 3rd scorer has been well documented so come the trading deadline, i believe we'll be EXTRMELY active. We can then go "all in" to try to acquire that elusive 3rd star. We have around 9 million expiring contracts to play around with as well as young prospects like Brooks and Green. However, plenty of other fringe contenders would be employing the same move. Yet our situation is unique. Like Morey said, for whatever reason, if it doesn't work out... if our pocket aces gets cracked, we can simply reload in 2010.
In 2010, with the exception of Yao, Battier, and (maybe)that 3rd star, we dont have anybody else on the book. Though, We should probably keep Scola, Landry, Brooks(if he's still there), Dorsey and some rookies. If we dont resign TMAC(or if he resigns for the minimum which i doubt would happen) we can then chase the elite free agents like Lebron/WADE/BOSH.
We can contend for the championship AND chase the 2010 dream. I"M EXCITED ABOUT OUR FUTURE.

I think Michael Redd or Richard Jefferson has a real good chance of being the Rockets' 3rd scorer by the trading deadline. The Bucks fits Morey's description of a team that thinks they have a chance of competing but will give up by the trading deadline. I can't see that team going anywhere and i won't be surprised if they'll be open to giving michael Redd away by mid Febuary.

the Bucks should be good if they can pick up a decent PG. But, since they are paying their players soooo much stupid money, maybe they have higher dreams that can't be accomplished. I just hope we're not that team that thinks they have a chance and really don't and end up giving up somebody we shouldn't. =\

I'm beginning to like Morey more and more. He seems very crafty, and very smart. He also seems like he'd be a bad friend, but that's okay, because I just need him to be a good GM.

I hope not.

I think we might have a chance at Mike Miller at the deadline.

I think Reese Witherspoon should get pectoral implants.
Just for fun.

With the addition of Barry, we no longer need a tall, white 3 pt specialist who can play SG and SF. Let's try to find someone who enjoys attacking the basket.

True We have only one player who is capable of attacking the basket a lot and thats Mcgrady.
We still need another wing that can and looks to attack the basket all the time.

Morey is an idiot who needs to put his money where his mouth is. We are still a two man team in a conference that continues to improve.

So what do you want Morey to do? Make a huge trade. What elite team is making big moves right now? What we need is health and a couple of vets who will actually step up and be able to score a couple of points in the postseason. Boston had three stars, but posey was one of the biggest reasons why they won that championship, the whole league wasn't rushing to pick him up last year were they? He already worked with damn near nothing last year and look what we got out of it. I like his plan, the season is a marathon not a race and last year we proved what improving your team and letting your players develop throughout the season can do. He said we will improve by trades and by the time the deadline comes I think we will. We have salaries to dump and someone will jump on that when they give up on their season. I think people are going overboard when they talk about what we need to make the jump. We need health, shooters that can play d and someone thats been in the damn playoffs thats not going to fall apart when theres 5 minutes left in game 7. It would be nice if we could have landed someone like maggette because we need a slashing athlete but who are we going to get thats affordable? Morey knows what hes doing........

Atleast wait until the trade deadline before you crucify him. So far, i've been very impressed with Morey's GMing....

A package of Brooks, Head, Greene, Jackson expiring, and Novak/Hayes, should be good for a rebuilding team.

Only 51 players ave'd 15ppg or more last yr(and played at least 66 games-having a third scorer who's health is suspect is not a route I'd like to see the Rockets travel again.) Of those 51,by far the best option-salary,tradeability,fit-is Mike Miller. Miller is Morey's Option A.
Minn will use Miller to sell a few tickets, hope he helps them win a couple of games early to bring casual ticket buyers back a couple of more times, show the young players what it takes to succeed. Then in Feb when Minn needs to start tanking for draft position Miller becomes very available. Morey has done a couple of trades w/McHale and a Jackson,Head,Novak and 09 First would be a nice package. Novak from area,Jackson expiring,Head short term roster fill.
In the "fun w/numbers so you can prove anything" department-
Assuming every team in the NBA has 2 scorers. Assuming just half the Play-Off teams have 3 scorers. That gives us 30 first options and a pool of 38 second, third options-or 68 players. Rafer Alston was 67 in scoring last yr.

Where not getting LBJ or Wade. LBJ is going to the big NYC with the Nets most likely, due to the fact that his Nike contract doubles.
