New Rocket Barry eager to play in Adelman's offense

Others seek a last stab at finally winning a championship. But Brent Barry has won two of those.

Some chase the money. But Barry had made his share.

The NBA way is to seek all of the above. But Barry knew what he wanted.

He has, he guesses, two more seasons as an NBA player. He wanted to remain with a contender, and said Wednesday that with good health the Rockets could be that. But he wanted his last seasons in the NBA to be with a team that would give him a chance to do the things he believes he can do, to play and play the style that might suit him best.

let's hope his impact is more Mario Elie than Charlie Ward (the last 2 Rockets who wore #17)

I imagine Barry will mostly be the back-up SG to McGrady but will be acting as the PG. Jackson last yr showed he could be an effective shooting PG so long as someone else ran the offense.(Brooks and Jackson together were just too short.)We'll prob see a couple of McGrady,Barry,Jackson shifts each game w/Brent and McGrady splitting setting each other up.

In fact the roster and the roles look pretty defined.
PG Alston,Jackson
Gd Head/Francis
SG McGrady,Barry
SF Battier,Harris/Greene
PF Scola,Dorsey,Hayes/Landry
C Yao,Motumbo

The backcourt rotation will be Alston,McGrady,Battier w/Barry as 6th Man,Jackson getting significant minutes. Head and Francis will fight it out to see who is injury/foul/ineffectiveness fifth gd. In a perfect world the loser leaves town-either trade or bought out. Brooks spends season in D-League til Jackson's traded and he's then brought up to assume Jackson's role. If Harris makes team,Greene will prob spend first half season in D-League.
The Rockets hope the frontcourt rotation will be Yao and Scola starting w/Dorsey as the primary backup for each, providing a defensive counterpart to their scoring. Hayes will be fourth big to cover fouls, etc. Motumbo will primarily see minutes against teams w/a big C-Phoenix,Portland. The Rockets in an ideal world would like to sign Landry relatively cheap to be the energy big off bench, pushing Hayes into street clothes and cheerleader status. But the team doesn't want to overspend on a player who'll prob get 15min/game at best. The other catch w/Landry is someone else has to go for him to make club. The cheapest choice would be Harris, but that leaves the Rockets heavily dependent on Barry and a Rookie for 2/3 reserves.
In all likelihood either Landry or Francis is not going to make the team, infuriating their fans.

Aside from T-Mac, we have one of the worst guard rotations in the league.

Head? Francis? Jackson? Brooks? Barry?

That's horrible!

If you think about it, every team with a superstar SG has a weak back court rotation. Cleveland, Miami, and LA all have pretty weak back courts, with Derek Fisher being the exception. You also forgot to mention Alston. I think our back court will be upgraded sometime throughout the year, but we'll see.

I'm not saying that HOU will continue to have horrible backcourts from here on out; just that we have a horrible backcourt right now. I expect our guard rotation to change in the near future, with Jackson's contract getting moved. Let's hope we get someone who isn't in his early 30s.

I did forget Rafer. I don't know how.

Brent Barry is awesome... he's a big point guard at times and a great shooter who's still got some athleticism about him. Not good defensively but in a team scheme such as that worked by the Rockets or Spurs, he's masked and it's OK.

Great pickup.
