Donte the Chucker

Post#1 » by luhbron » Sun Jul 20, 2008 2:17 am

Excerpt from ESPN Summer League Live Blog

"Donte the Chucker

Houston's Donte Greene leads all players in Vegas in shot attempts with an average of 17.3 per game. Couple that with the fact he hasn't had an assist in three games and you feel fairly comfortable calling him a jacker. Like most players who rely on their jump shot, he is streaky. In the first half today, he has started 2-for-8 but you know that isn't going to keep him from shooting. The Rockets' coaching staff simply have to hope he catches fire.

We are six minutes into the third quarter and Greene has already had enough time to fire up six more shots -- 3-pointer (made), 3-pointer (made), 3-pointer (missed), layup (made), jumper (airball), jumper (airball).

As we start the fourth, Greene is 5-for-16, while Aaron Brooks is 1-for-10. Ew."

Thought it was humorous.
So far he looks like JR Smith II.

I think he'll progress faster than Steve Novak Though... He'll be more disciplined in the real games and less jack happy.. I really like his length and he's pretty athletic.. Still needs alotta work. He is a streaky shooter

We've just got to hope he matures and realizes the gift he has with his length, height and finishing ability. I don't thikn anybody is expecting him to contribute much this season anyway...

Shouldn't be a big problem. We kind of need someone like that who's not named Bobby Jackson. He should be a catch and shoot guy this year, anyway. Creating off the dribble would be a bonus.

Donte will drop 30 on someone next season, but it will only happen once.

He'll average about 4 points in limited minutes.

That's not too surprising. The big knock on him in college was his shot selection.

I was thinking the same thing. But coming off of the bench i'd rather have a j.r. who can get hot then some of the players we've had. If he does turn out like j.r. some nights we're going to love him and some nights we're going to hate him

Reminds me of Walt Williams, who the rockets had at one time. His shot selection will get better as he matures. Looks like he needs some more upper body strength as well as he does not rebound very well.

When he tries he rebounds pretty decent (or atleast last night sortof) His timing is just slighty off. But once he plays with the team in practice, etc.. he will learn he does not shoot the ball every time he touches it.. and he is a tall J.R. Smith as stillmatic said in an earlier post.

Well at least he has a scoring mentality, and that's what we need. Someone who's not afraid to score, and who can actually come in and contribute. I'd imagine that when Mac and Yao are drawing attention, Donte will be able to exploit the D.

Keep this in mind, during summer league most teams don't really coach the players as far as skill development and X's and O's. They run a few plays and let the players play because they want to see what they have. They want to see a guy's strengths and weaknesses so they can see what they need to work on to make improvements to their game. So what you have here is a very talented kid who is one year removed from high school who had the ability to come in and drop 40 points on 20 shots in his first professional contest. He followed that up with a poor shooting game, another solid game, and then another poor shooting game. Also consider the fact they are playing these games in consecutive days(including tonight, 5 games in 7 days). You are seeing the rawest, uncoached, and possibly even somewhat mentally and physically fatigued version of Donte Green who need I remind you looks head and shoulders better than Carl Landry did at this same time last year.

Don't get too up or down about him just yet because they haven't even started the process of "fixing" him yet. This is the Syracuse version of Green. Wait until he gets some weight training and coaching in him before you judge him, but I think he has exceeded expectations. He has shown that he has the tools to contribute if he can catch on fast whereas many were saying it would take him several years. I'm encouraged by what I have seen. Can he get better, hell yeah and that isn't a bad thing at all.

Also it should be noted that he has performed better than several of the people drafted much higher than him like Joe Alexander of the Bucks to name one and several highly touted second year up and comers like Thad Young of the Sixers.

Good point Vator, but here's the catch.

Landry put his head down & worked and earned his playing time, will Greene suck up his pride and ego to do that?

Landry even in his first few minutes, I remember against the Raptors I think got like 6 rebounds in 10 minutes. His effort, tenacity were just lovely. The type of player the other fans hate, but his team adores.

greene has talent, and definitely has a mentality to put shots up, but he's also got some game. I hope we can bring up like we did with landry, or more importantly I hope Greene bring himself up the way Landry did. Workout hard, play hard, practice hard. Adelman's proved he'll try you out if you're worth his time.

Just looked Landry up. He was slightly better at rebounding than I remembered, but didn't shoot much. 7.4 points on 50% shooting with 6.6 rebounds in 22.8 minutes and a lot of fouling. Not bad at all, but of course he was no Mike Harris back then who did 12.6 points on 68% and 7 rebounds in one more minute of play. Novak shot poorly and Brooks couldn't miss. Uh oh, both of those trends reversed during the real season. Let's hope Donte shoots poorly again tonight. :D

Of course you have a point about working hard on your game to get better(see Gerald Green) as being a big factor, but we just don't know about that part of the equation yet. Just going off the eye test so far.

Just for fun, check out a 2nd year Rudy Gay. 18.2 points on .417, .333 on threes, and the same pattern of good game, bad game, good game..

Finally NBATV aired a Rockets game.
Greene showed an inclination to drive when his shot wasn't falling, which is a good sign. Unfortunately your grandma prob displayed better ball handling ability as he lost it numerous times when trying to drive. Seriously,he looked like he was playing way too fast.(I imagine watching McGrady up close will teach him quite a bit on how a tall player can handle the ball and get to the basket.)
His shot wasn't falling,but...his stroke looked really good, range is no factor and all his misses were on-line-usually long. His FT attempts were as pretty as you could want. Philly usually had thier C/PF on him and it must have been a little unusual to Greene to try shooting over someone as tall or taller than himself.
He had a few passes mishandled that could have been assists. One thing was at end of game he didn't take shots he was taking earlier-he passed off quite quickly.
Defensively-he made an effort, but he wasn't often matched up to the SF,so I cut him some slack. We know he's going to struggle on D for a while. He did recover and get a block,so he does try. He will need some weight room work and a whole lot of coaching before he will become a mediocre rebounder. Til then,he's going to get by w/his long arms and jumpimg ability.
Greene has the tools, whether or not he'll become a skilled craftsman w/them is up to him.

I am very encouraged from what I have seen from Greene so far.
He has a lot of skills and has a very good chance of being a starter one day imo.
He needs to work hard on his body and stamina.
He gets fatigued very fast and he needs to add some muscle.
When he does that his rebounding and defense will improve a lot.
Offensively he is fine , needs to improve his handles and get more experienced and learn the game.
Good draft pick.
“He didn’t miss?” , “That’s fantastic. That’s tremendous. I wish I could have a day like that. I dream of the day I could go 12-for-12.”-Rafer Alston
