OT - Engagement

Post#1 » by jove9 » Thu Jul 31, 2008 12:14 am

Where I come from, marriage is a bourgeois institution that extends property ownership into the domestic sphere. Nonetheless, I'm going to pop the question to my american girlfriend.

Do any of you have any clever methods for doing so? I plan on asking her on 8/8/08, so I've got some time.

I don't live in the Houston area, and I'm not going to take her to a game and ask at halftime, so forget that one.

Awwww Jove how cute you are. You should wait til it's winter time, and take her on a romantic sleigh ride under the stars, then pop the question.

Where do you live? It might help a little bit.

Go to her job, Give the secretary some flowers and chocolate (or whatever she likes) and then when they walk it up to her.. wait a little while then go up there and make it sweet. (add your own juices to it.) Just a thought.. But not if she works like at HEB or something...

As a person that has recently done this I would say you need to find a place thats special to both of you and then just ask. Sentiment is the name of the game. Don't worry too much about what you are gonna say...it'll be corny no matter how much thought you put into it. Butter her up with a nice dinner before...and then find that place and just get on your knee and ask.

Jove, if you lived in Houston, I'd recommend Houston's. One of my favorite restaurants. Since you're in Dallas (sorry, again), and I can only assume that their finest establishments serve gruel, you're on your own regarding recommendations from me.

Proposing in an argument?!? That's funny.

She's 27. Just finished med school.

I didn't want to propose while she was still in school because I didn't want her to be distracted from her studies.

Yeah well if you want creative, go on a winter horse ride through Central Park. End up at the lake on the north end, then while sitting on a bench, have a quartet of italian pizza shop owners come serenade you with a midget in a white tuxedo trailing behind them to present the ring. You will need a small table covered in a red and white checkered tablecloth and large, half-melted candles as well.

For my prior "I got nothin!", Houston's is just a really nice restaurant.

I found swing dancing around the outer level of the Tower of the Americas in San Antonio to be really fun. Doesn't Dallas have a tower too? Not sure, I usually try to avoid the place.

I try to avoid the place too. I hate Dallas. I just go to work, home, and the gym and try to avoid being out in the city.

BTW, that central park thing isn't a bad idea.... Now all I need to do is win the lotto.

I had a friend who used to work at Houston's back in the late 90s. He also said that it's a great place, but I've never been there.

Ask her friend or family to take her out to some kind of weekend getaway. You can then surprise her by either waiting in her room or at some prearranged spot. You can also ask her friend or family to take her out to the nice restaurant if weekend getaway is not possible. Best of luck.

Dude first of all Congrats!

Second of all I just recently got engaged in April. FYI I did mine at a concert. We went to the LifeHouse concert and when they played our song I got down on a knee and proposed. She loved it and was shocked as all. Took alot of planning with the security guards, metal detectors, and her bumping me all the time :). But well worth it. If you have a favorite artist wait till they come into town and do it than.

Also if you need any information on planning you can find me on the Magic Boards. We arent getting married until March next year but we have done alot and I can tell you what, and when to do things for a time frame...

Third of all GOOD LUCK and Enjoy :)
