Has the Artest trade changed your mind about Morey?

Post#1 » by HtownPA » Wed Aug 13, 2008 3:56 am

Some posters have mentioned Morey never playing high-level basketball as a weakness. He wouldn't be able to understand how the league works the same way that Jordan or another player would.

If you thought this way, do you still believe a Jordan/Jerry West/Isiah Thomas/Dumars/Larry Bird/Elgin Baylor GM would be a better fit? Or has the Artest trade changed your mind, even though Morey still doesn't have NBA playoff experience?

Who thought Morey sucked?

Last Year he brought in
Scola
Landry
Mike James (Who we thought was good, and got rid of Juwan Howard)
Steve Francis (sounded good and no one thought we were going to get him)
Aaron Brooks (Got good hype in olympics select team and Summer league)
Then traded for Bjax got rid of Mike James contract..
Then pulled this off.. after having a good draft.

Morey is doing AMAZING!!

Speaking of the Artest trade, is it going to be official on the 13th or the 14th?

I questioned the logic in drafting a point guard when we got Brooks but he's done alright so I'm not concerned. Francis was a question mark and well Mike James was decent for a brief stretch. If Morey has any strength it would definitely be his ability to solve our needs without giving up anything significant and all the questionable deals he makes have turned out to serve a greater purpose.

Only move I didn't like was the Battier-Gay trade, but that was under CD, however I think Morey was the real deal maker there.

Otherwise, he's been great, and I thought so after last summer when a team with a lack of talent became quite loaded, didn't pan out the way we wanted, but I haven't found a reason to give him lower than an A +

It's funny how everyone on the board is asking "who said more sucked" when before the artest trade there were a lot of people trying to call dude out.. Anyway, as far as the comparison to more high-level players that holds no weight because some of them work and some of them don't. Michael Jordan is terrible @ evaluating talent. While someone like joe dumars always seems to find a solid draft pick no matter where detroit lands. Morey has done a great job and we really haven't taken any risks.

As a stats guy myself, I was absolutely thrilled when Morey was chosen to be the successor. I have yet to disagree with a move he's made.

Considering what else Morey's pulled off, I think the whole, and mild, "could possibly have gotten more for Gay/Swift" exemption has pretty well been shown to be incorrect (Yes, I went there). That, and not trading/replacing/backing up Alston, have been the two biggest points a lot of this board has disagreed with Morey over.

Since pretty well everyone that jumped on the bandwagon prior to our losing in the playoffs with a severely depleted roster then jumped back off after we lost, then jumped back on again after his early offseason maneuvers, I think it's pretty safe to say that anyone that's disagreeing with him is just not thinking enough ahead or in terms of risk/cap/option/asset management.

For myself, I disagreed with James and Francis initially for a short time (i.e. a couple posts/days) before realizing the benefits to the trades aside from my expectations of their on-court fit/benefit to the team - namely, risk management, potential (if unlikely) no-risk depth, and improved trade assets. That's been it from me. Everything he's done is pure shrewd genius.
Morey 2020.

I have no doubt in my mind Morey is and will be a great GM. In his short tenure he's pulled out IMO 2 very crafty trades in Scola and Artest. I think that already puts him in good standing as it shows he's aggressively searching out ways to improve the team. He's also done an excellent job with roster salary, leaving lots of cap room when the T-Mac/Yao window closes.

The only thing I would consider sketchy at this point in time is his evaluation of talent, but I'm not sure how involved Morey is in talent/draft evaluation. Adelman seemed to have a big hand in the Brooks selection for instance. However Morey has made exceptional use of the picks he has through trading/buying picks.

As for the Battier/Gay trade I don't think Morey had any hand in that. At the time Morey was still under CD's wing, and I don't ever remember Morey ever commenting about it. I know JVG has said in an interview he would've kept Gay himself. I suspect it was mostly CD's doing.

His idea to trade Rudy Gay for Battier. Made it up with this Artest trade. Lets hope it works out and everyone stays healthy. If not....he is gonna have one hell of a rebuilding job on his hands.

The Rudy Gay thing still hurts. I know we traded the draft pick not Gay, but damn he's a good player. I was one of those who supported keeping Alston last year, or at least saying he should keep his starting job over James and Francis.

LOL I remeber that , I said we needed to trade Alston no matter what and that both Francis and james are better players , thank god it didn't go down they way I wanted.
And I agree , the Gay trade still hurts , not as much because we traded Gay but because I felt like we didn't get enough value , at the least I felt like we needed to get their 24th overall pick who turned out to be Lowrey.

Right, but what I was getting at is that considering Morey's aforementioned shrewdness, do you really think that option was there in any way?

Carl Landry? Donte Greene who turned into Ron Artest? Hell, even Aaron Brooks is a very solid pick.
