It's a matter of preference.

Roto cumulates all stats starting from day 1 until the end of regular season. For each category (whether that may be PTS, AST, 3PTM, etc), you are given a score between 1 to X (X being the number of participants). Your total score is the addition of the scores you get from each category.
So let's say you are in a league of 3 players and you're playing with 3 categories: PTS, REB, AST.
Consider the following table:

moofs: 412 pts, 159 reb, 21 ast
Player B: 124 pts, 325 reb, 124 ast
Player C: 325 pts, 60 reb, 56 ast

moofs gets a cumulative score of 6 because he is 1st in pts (3 pts), 2nd in reb (2 pts), and 3rd in ast (1 pt). Likewise, Player B and Player C get a score of 7 and 5 respectively.

In H2H, you face an opponent and compete against he/she for the entire week (usually from Monday to Sunday). Within that matchup, each category gives you get a score of 0 or 1. 1 if you beat your opponent in an arbitrary category. 0 if you lose. At the end of the week, your score is based on the number of categories you've won (W) and lost (L). All categories are weighted equally.

Towards the end of the season (usually 3 weeks before the regular season ends), your wins, draws (yes, there are draws), and losses in your weekly matchups are added to give you cumulative wins, draws and losses. Based on your record, you make or break the playoffs. Usually, the top 6 teams make the playoffs. The first two seeds get a bye week. In order to win the league, you must win in the championship game.

BTW moofs, I recommend you join both leagues to see if you like one over the other.

About how much effort do they generally require to be in and do well? Or is it enough luck that you can be lazy with them and still have a shot
