UT offers the CAP program for students in Texas that don't get into UT. You go to a UT system school (UTSA, UTEP, UTA, etc) and then get a 3.2, which isn't bad and your in at UT next year. Just letting you know since you want to go to UT really bad.

UT also offers summer admission, in which you take 3 or so classes over the summer (its not as bad as it sounds) and then are admitted to the fall.

Both aTm and UT have their strengths. If you want to be a veterinarian, definitely go to aTm, as well as some mechanical and agricultural deals.

If you want great sports teams to watch, both are good, but UT is better.

If you want more night life and music and other cool but quirky stuff, Austin is your place.

That said, UT is significantly more difficult to get into and to get scholarships to. If money is a problem, aTm may offer you more which could influence your decision.

I'm a freshman at UT this semester and I am loving it. Things are a little crazy, especially on college gameday when we are at home, but the overall experience is awesome.

Both places, unless you get into a very specific major, you will be a number and not a name for the first 2 years. That's just the way really big colleges work.

UT has around 50,000 students, one of the largest universities in the world. If you don't like that kind of environment, neither UT nor aTm will be for you.

Best of luck going wherever you want.

well im interested in medicine and finance haha
not sure which one i want yet..but am hoping to make a decision. however due to my laziness in hs..i put myself in a bad position applyin to UT cuz im sittin around a 3.1 on 4.0 scale. and top 10 percent at my school is like freaking 3.8 and above. so do yall think if i major in some thing like liberal arts and get in..is it easy to transfer majors?

I'm not familiar with the summer thing, but getting CAPed only guarantees you admission to natural science or liberal arts. If you want to go to Cockrell, McCoombs, or the nursing school you have to work your ass off at SA, El Paso, Dallas, or whereever it is you decide to go. I was 6th in a class of 119, and I'm pretty sure I needed all my extracarriculars and volunteer hours to get my major of choice at UT.

My advice is to apply to UT and TAMU, and then examine your options after you hear back from the colleges. Go ahead and apply to UH as well since they're admissions standards aren't near as tough. Looking back, going to the best school for undergrad wasn't really a must. There's nothing wrong with going to a community college or a tier 2 school as long as your put in the work to transfer or get into a good graduate program. If you don't want to be a liberal arts major, but are willing to do that just to go to UT as a freshman you're making the wrong choice IMO.

UT Alum - Like someone said above, McCoombs (business school) which pertains to you, is going to be impossible for you to get into with your GPA. Your only chance is to do that CAP program and get a 4.0 or close to it. That's not hard considering you'll be taking intro courses, but you'd better wake up and start taking school seriously. As for medicine, you should go into a bio major or something related to that (liberal arts will hurt you if you wanna go to medical school/medical profession b/c it IS liberal arts).

Sorry to burst your bubble or act like I'm trying to be your dad, but if you take time off before you start college it'll be hard to get back in, if you're not totally dedicated. Plus you'll be behind in school (credits-wise).

i was like 2 or 3 places out of top 10 percent (size 600+)
my gpa aint high enough to be in the top 10 percent
because i didn't take all honor classes to boost my gpa

my school got some funking gpa system -- my class is the last year they used it, after that they used the normal type with honor starting at 5.0

honor class: 100=10.0, 99=9.9, 98=9.8, so forth (so 90 and 89 doesn't make whole lot of difference)
advanced class: 100=9.0, 99=8.9, 98=8.8, so forth
normal class: 100=8.0, 99=7.9, you get the idea

i got accepted to UT engineering school with nothing impressive on my resume (just an avg student)
not so great on my SAT score either
between 1200-1300 can't remmeber exactly

i don't know if doing volunteer work actually help
well that was long time ago
right now the tutuition fee is 2x when i was in UT

I was pre-med so I think I can share you some knowledge in regards to pre-medicine.

If you are considering pre-med, you need to do a lot of research. When you're search for the best pre-med program, it's not simply looking at the number of science courses that's being offered - it's far beyond that. First, know which schools have a pre-med program. Then find out whether or not the school you're looking at has a strong science curriculum, a pre-med committee. There's a lot of websites (such as princetonreview.com) which provides tons of information. Doing all these research may be overwhelming if you do it on your own. So I recommend you to seek advice/help from your parents, teachers, school counselor, and friends/relatives who are currently attending college.

As much as I hate to say, academic reputation does carry some weight when you apply to medical schools. And most good schools in general have a good pre-med program. Most students try to set realistic goals, but I hope you don't shy away from applying to U.T simply because of your GPA.

I love the communication classes at UH. The professors are really laid back and have a sense of humor, a nice change of pace from the 7 pretentious "doctors" that teach my English/"Human Situation" class.
I'm sorry I haven't been funny. I am not a comedian. I am Lenny Bruce.

Dude, I think every college freshman says they're pre-med at some point. Then they smash into 310M or whatever orgo 1 is called at their school, and things immediately change. I don't actually have a lot of experience with it, but I think almost any major can be called pre-med. You simply have to complete the chems, maths, physics, and bios that most med school require. I had 2 friends, one was psych pre-med and the other was math pre-med. Only one of them made it, but they're undergrad majors were in subjects they liked so they would put in the most effort, and that's essential.

Wouldn't try to get in with a crap major, that back fired in my face when I applied to UT. I remember when in high school I was top 15% (3.4 Gpa) on the basketball team and involved in school. I wanted to be an engineer but i wasn't sure i would be able to get in. my bio teacher was telling people to just declare a crap major(damn that woman) to get in then change when you get accepted.. sounded good to me i declared theater arts on my application (maybe i choose the wrong crap major) I got provisionally accepted would have to attend UTSA for a year and then go to UT austin. didnt want to do that so i accepted an offer to Texas Tech Uni its still a top 100 engineering program but its no ut plus it might as well be in another state. Now i always wonder if i just declared my true major if i would have gotten in that way.

so be truthful always put what you want to do then if you dont get in transfer at least you wont look back wondering.
